Boko Haram attacks aid helicopter in Borno State killed two civilians including a five-year old child

The United Nations says 2 civilians including a five-year old child have been killed in an attack on its aid helicopter by Boko Haram.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday in Damasak, Borno State, a town bordering Niger Republic.

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon in a memo seen by AFP, said the fatalities were on the ground, and that others were also injured.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has suspended humanitarian operations in Nigeria’s North-East following the deadly Boko Haram attack on the aid helicopter.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon in a statement, urged the Nigerian authorities to continue to protect aid workers by tackling the terrorists.

Gunmen kidnap the wife of Appeal Court Justice in Cross River State


Wife of the Appeal Court Justice, Ekwele Agube has been kidnapped in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, this is confirmed on AIT.

Ekwele who is the wife of Justice Ignatius Agube was kidnapped in her shop along with Ekorinim Phase II in Calabar Municipality Area Council of Cross River State on Saturday, at about 8:30 pm local time.

Confirming the incident, Permanent Secretary in charge of Security in the Governor’s Office, Dr Alfred Mboto said the suspected kidnappers numbering about 4 shot at a female relation of the kidnapped Justice’s wife who is currently receiving treatment at the Nigeria Navy Reference Hospital Calabar.

Mboto said all the routes to the areas have been locked down by the security agencies including the riverine corridors, assuring that the suspects are being tracked.

Some residents who prefer anonymity said cases of kidnapping in Calabar and its environs are becoming unbearable in recent times.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Security (South), Ani Esin also confirmed that one locally made pistol was recovered at the scene where the kidnappers operated.

Both the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Irene Ugbo and that of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Solomon Eremi said they could not comment on the matter as it has not been brought to their notice officially.

Ekwele Agube operates a shop at Ekorinim not too far from her house where some gunmen who drove in a commercial Audi car kidnapped her.

President Buhari makes new appointment


President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Rev Yakubu Pam as the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).

Until his appointment, Rev Pam was the Chairman of the Plateau State Christian Pilgrims Board.

Born on 20th February, 1960 in Gyel, Jos South LGA of Plateau State, Rev Pam holds a first degree in Christian Education.

As an ordained Minister, Rev Pam brings to the position more than 30 years of leadership experience in the Christian community, coupled with a deep understanding of promoting inter-religious harmony and conflict resolution in the northern parts of the country.

The cleric has held many leadership positions in the Church, including Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of Northern Nigeria (which includes the 19 Northern States and Abuja) from 2016 to date, Vice President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, 2013 to date and District Superintendent, Jos mainland Assemblies of Nigeria, 2010 to date.

He also served as Chairman, Plateau State Inter-Religious Council; and Chairman, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Committee, Plateau State.

A statement was obtained on Saturday by Garba Shehu, the President’s Spokesman, said the appointment took effect from 26th June, 2020 for a period of five years.

It added that “President Buhari urges the Executive Secretary NCPC to sustain his reconciliatory pre-disposition in his new position.”

The Lagos State Government has concluded a three-day training programme for newly engaged Central Business Districts (CBD), Enforcement Officers for effective and efficient service delivery.
Speaking at the closing ceremony and passing out parade of the 40 Ad-hoc staff recently engaged by the State Government to enforce traffic and environmental rules within the Ikeja Central Business Districts, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Babatunde Onafowokan re-echoed the importance the State Government placed on training and retraining of its workforce.
He tasked the newly engaged staff to be good ambassadors of the Lagos State Government and be courteous to the motoring public as well as residents and business owners within the business districts.
In his words: “As you are passing out today, the uniform you are wearing is not a license for extortion or to be unruly to the public, be courteous and respectful, show good character and integrity which Lagos State stands for and shun all forms of corruption”.
Oyerinde disclosed that the essence of the programme was to train enforcement officers on international best practices in order to ensure effective management of traffic and enforcement of environmental laws within the business districts of the State.
The Special Adviser averred that the newly trained officers are the first set of an enforcement unit that will implement traffic and environment rules within the Ikeja Business District, noting that the Ikeja Business District, being an elite business zone, deserves well trained and courteous officers who will enforce traffic and environmental laws.
The 40 enforcement officers were trained by the Lagos State Law Enforcement Institute on the rudiments of law and its enforcement, as well as on the use of body cameras for effective execution of their duties.
