Seyi Makinde Upholds Yoruba Culture As He Prostrates To Greet Olubadan (See Photos)

On Tuesday, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde and top members of his government visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Akanmu Olasupo Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1 to give him presents on the Monarch's 92nd birthday.

In pictures released on the Governor's social media handles, he could be seen prostrating himself to greet the revered Monarch.

Ideally, this is a sign of respect among the Yorubas but civilisation has almost eroded this beautiful culture; it is now believed that political power is more relevant than traditions.

Governors appoint kings and as such, seen as the most powerful in their states. Despite being aware of this, Seyi Makinde still bowed respectfully to greet Oba Saliu.

For the latter part of his tenure, late Abiola Ajimobi was at loggerheads with the King over some alterations made to the Ibadan kingship system by the government. At a point, Ajimobi reminded the King that he could dethrone him. The fight culminated into the devastating loss of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls in the last general elections.

It would also be recalled that former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala also had issues with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi which also took negative effect on the reelection bid of the former in 2011.

However, it seems Seyi Makinde has been managing his relationship with the royal fathers well by according them the respect they deserve. One can only wish for this rare level of humility from the billionaire Governor.

DSS Invites Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage Over Alleged Political Utterances Against President Buhari’s Government

The Department of State Service, DSS, has reportedly invited Nigerian music producer, Michael Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy and Tiwatope Savage, also known as Tiwa Savage, for questioning over alleged political comments against President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Following the increase in rape cases in Nigeria, Tiwa Savage began a movement known as “WeAreTired” in protest of the situation.

The musician through the movement called on the current government to take action to stem the tide of rape in the country.

According to SaharaReporters, the call by Tiwa Savage for the Buhari’s administration to live up to its responsibilities to Nigerians earned the singer an invitation by the DSS.

Together with Don Jazzy, Savage was invited to the DSS office in Lagos two weeks ago during which they were warned to be careful with their posts on the social media.

Shortly after the invitation, the celebrities together with colleagues Yemi Alade and Waje were summoned by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, who while sharing efforts they were making to tackle rape and other problems in the state and country, warned the musicians to steer clear of political comments in order not to incur the wrath of the President Buhari administration.

A member of Tiwa Savage’s management team, who confirmed the development noted that the singer will not stop speaking for Nigerians regardless of any move by governnent.

Apart from the two celebrities, the DSS recently invited a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia, over his comments on the operations of Boko Haram in the Northern part of Nigeria.

Osinbajo, Fintiri, minister meet over humanitarian and security situation in the North-East.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, met with Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa over humanitarian and security situation in the North-East.

Also at the meeting were Hajia Sadiya Umar-Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development; National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno; Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) among others.

Fintiri told State House correspondents afterwards that the meeting was successful and fruitful.

“These are strategies we need to keep for ourselves so that we move the country and the North-East forward.

“I think it is too early to divulge the information at the moment.”

He said that a key humanitarian issue in the region was the movement of food and other aids to the badly affected areas.

According to him, the military has been doing well of late while the communities are opening up.

The governor said that serious efforts were being made to address the issue of the flooding in the region.

“The flooding does not affect the North-East generally, but my state is one of those that have been identified by NEMA to have flooded this year.

“And personally, I have been making efforts in addressing the flooding challenge in my state.”

On the issue of shelter for Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs), he said that the IDP camps in the region were well taken care of.

He said that more houses were being built for IDPs in Borno.

“They are building more houses in all the local governments in that state for them to relocate IDPs camps to their various local governments of origin.

“That is also happening in Adamawa. We are addressing them headlong and we are moving forward in ensuring that our citizens are well taken care of and they are settled properly the way it should be in their communities.”

On COVID-19, Fintiri said that the curve had been flattened in the whole North-East, adding that efforts would be stepped up to ensure that the protocols were kept.

On her part, Umar-Farouk said that it was only Borno that still had a high concentration of IDPs.

“In Adamawa, there are one or two IDP camps and they originated from Borno State.

“In Yobe, we do not have official IDP camps; they are all back in their communities.

“So, what we are really working on now is Borno where we have a high concentration of these IDPs; and the government is doing everything possible to support, assist and to ensure that they are being catered for,” she said.

Sanwo-Olu calls for remodeling of Lagos airport’s facilities to become a hub of business and tourism

Sanwo-Olu made the call in Ikeja when the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) management paid him a courtesy visit ahead of the re-opening of airspace for international flights.

He advised the FAAN management on remodelling of the airport’s facilities to become a hub of business and tourism.

According to him, some of the facilities installed in the airport at inception are due for modernisation and upgrading.

The governor made a case for the provision of fast free internet connectivity within the airport lounges, as the era of passengers sitting for long without internet access had passed.

He said that the functionality of the airport must be fully explored, hence, the need to invest in facilities that would drive more passenger traffic to the airport.

“Travellers across the world are looking for destinations where things they enjoy in their comfort zones are provided.

“When we provide services and infrastructure that will drive traffic to our airport, not only will it triple the revenue generated for the government, it will also improve the status of the airport within the continent,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said that the state government had been working round the clock with the federal government to initiate safety protocols in place at the airport and drive compliance.

The governor said that the effort would be followed by a joint assessment of the airport facility with FAAN and other agencies.

He said that the state already started the construction of a world-class bus terminal close to the airport to ensure that travellers enjoy better experience while passing through the gateway.

“The bus terminal will serve as holding station for international passengers who will not be driving into the airport,” the governor said.

He said that the bus station would be complemented with rail infrastructure to shuttle air passengers from the metropolis departure terminals.

Sanwo-Olu also said that the rail project was part of the Red Line Rail project which would start from Ebute Metta through Oshodi.

“The Right-of-Way of this project has been determined and we are hoping the project will start before the end of the year.

“An airport is a gateway that defines the nation, because it is the first facility to be seen by international travellers.

“The MMIA is an important asset, not only to the federal government, but also to Lagos State.

“The strategic use of this airport should necessitate the need for the state to fully harness the asset and make it a bubbling destination for tourists and businessmen coming into the country.

“As a state government, we are taking complementary efforts to ensure the airport promotes business and is safe for travellers,” he said.

Earlier, the Managing Director, FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, said that the Lagos airport contributed 70 per cent of FAAN’s total revenue.

Yadudu commended the state government for the construction of the airport road from Oshodi, noting that the intervention had strengthened the partnership between Lagos and FAAN.

The FAAN boss, however, pleaded with the governor to intervene in ensuring smooth safety compliance and service provision as the airport prepared to re-open for commercial activities.

Part of the discussion was on actionable steps collectively put in place at the MMIA by the federal and state governments to give travellers comfort and better experience when the facility opened for air traffic.

Requests by FAAN included provision of BRT buses to commute passengers from car park to departure and arrival halls and expansion of strategic airport roads.

The FAAN team also asked for help in halting of encroachment on the airport land around Ajao Estate and Shasha.

N10m suit: Oxford University loses bid to stop Nigerian lawyer challenging definition of words

The Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has dismissed the preliminary objection filed by the University of Oxford, England to challenge an N10m lawsuit filed against it by a Nigerian lawyer, Ogedi Ogu.

Ogu, in his suit before Justice I.O. Harrison alleged that the words “mortgagee’’ and “mortgagor” were wrongly defined in the Oxford Dictionary, published by Oxford University Press.

He claimed that he was embarrassed and suffered a loss of reputation as a lawyer when he relied on the definitions of the words in the Oxford Dictionary to offer legal advice to a professional colleague.

He said the professional colleague later pointed out to him that the words were wrongly defined in Oxford Dictionary and since then all his professional colleagues stopped seeking legal advice from him.

Ogu asked the court to order the University of Oxford and Oxford University Press to pay him N10 million in damages.

But the defence counsel, Mrs Funke Adekoya (SAN), filed a preliminary objection, urging the court to dismiss the suit for being incompetent.

Adekoya contended that Ogu did not comply with Section 97 of the Sheriff and Civil Process Act in issuing and serving his writ of summons.

She described the writ as “incurably defective,” adding that it was “liable to be set aside.”

The SAN further contended that Oxford University Press, which was joined as 2nd defendant, was a non-juristic entity, which could not be sued because it was only a department under the University of Oxford.

But in her June 30, 2020 ruling, Justice Harrison partly disagreed with Adekoya and dismissed one leg of the preliminary objection.

Contrary to Adekoya’s contention, Justice Harrison said, “The writ was validly issued and service was lawful and regular.”

But the judge upheld the SAN’s submission that Oxford University Press was not a juristic entity and struck its name out from the suit.

The judge held, “The court finds that not being a juristic person, the 2nd defendant can’t be sued and since they are a department of the 1st defendant, whatever affects the 1st defendant will naturally affect and bind on their departments.

“The notice of preliminary objection succeeds partially.”

Ogu, in his suit, claimed that Oxford Dictionary wrongly defined the word “mortgagee’’ as the borrower in a mortgage transaction; and “mortgagor’’ as the lender.

He said this was contrary to the definition of “mortgagee” as lender and “mortgagor” as borrower in many other dictionaries.

The Nigerian lawyer said when he wrote to the University of Oxford to complain, the university admitted the error but refused to admit liability.

According to him, the university told him that “Our dictionaries are made available as a reference tool only; they are never held out by OUP as being an alternative to seeking independent legal or financial advice, and we cannot take responsibility for an individual’s decision to use them as such.”

CAN tells Buhari to suspend controversial CAMA 2020

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to issue directives to suspend implementation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020.

Rev. Samson Ayokunle, CAN President, made the call at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Recall that the National Assembly passed the CAMA bill earlier this year and the president signed it into law on Aug. 7.

Ayokunle said that comments in public domain were beginning to indicate that the Act was capable of further undermining the faith of stakeholders in the Nigerian state.

The CAN president, represented by, Rev. William Okoye, General Overseer, All Christians Fellowship Mission (ACFM), said that the association had not been availed with the authentic version of the Act.

“We consider the Act a complex of statecraft compendium, laden with issues inimical to peace and stability and overall wellbeing of the country.

“From the reactions of stakeholders and a cross-section of the people it is apparent the Act either did not receive input from various interest groups or failed to accommodate their views.

“There is need for stakeholders to seek judicial intervention or amendment of the Act.

“We must allay stakeholders’ fears and encourage them to exercise their democratic rights, hoping that when citizens approach the state institutions they shall rise up to the challenge,” he said.

The CAN president urged Buhari to issue the appropriate directives to suspend the implementation of the Act based on stakeholders’ opinions and affirm a thorough reappraisal of the legislation.

He said the directive should be in correlation with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), other extant legal and policy frameworks, the national economy, national security, national interest and the wellbeing of the people.

8 women, children on way to naming ceremony die in canoe accident

A canoe transporting 10 women and children to a naming ceremony in Kebbi capsized on Monday, August 31, 2020, leading to the death of eight people.

The victims drowned at Tungar-Gegero in Jega local government area of Kebbi, according to the chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sani Dododo, on Tuesday, September 1.

He said the canoe’s operator, a middle aged man, was able to save two of the women when the incident happened around 10:30 am.

The SEMA boss said the agency has recovered the corpses of three adults and one girl.

“We are making frantic efforts to recover the remaining corpses,” he said.

Dododo said professional traditional fishermen have been recruited to search for the bodies in the terrain of water from Tungar-Gegeru down to Kimba, to Jega bridge, and to Mungadi.

“Normally, if there is this kind of capsizing, you cannot find the bodies in the same place a day after, but such bodies may be recovered far away from the scene of the accident,” he said.

A similar boat accident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Monday claimed two lives, with another person declared missing.

A total of seven people, including two toddlers, were inside the boat which was on its way from Makoko community to the Offin area in Ikorodu when it capsized.

Two Policemen Killed As Adams Oshiomhole Narrowly Escape Death At Benin Bye-Pass In Attempt Assassination

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Tuesday escaped death by the whisker in a convoy accident.

It was learnt the incident occurred around 12noon at Benin-Lagos bypass before Oluku junction when Oshiomhole was on his way to Usen in Ovia local government of Edo for campaign.

Two policemen attached to the convoy dead while two others sustained serious injuries during the incident and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

His media aide, Victor Oshioke, who narrated the incident, however alleged it was an assassination attempt.

Oshioke, in a statement, said: ‘’The convoy was heading for Usen, where Comrade Oshiomhole was expected to appear at a campaign rally, along with Pastor Ize-Iyamu, when a trailer driving in the same direction veered off its course, hit the back-up Toyota Hilux carrying seven policemen, forcing it off the road into the bush and rammed into the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) carrying Comrade Oshiomhole, causing substantial damage.

“Comrade Oshiomhole and other persons in the convoy, apart from those indicated above, did not sustain any injury.

“It is pertinent to state, without fear of contradiction, that the convoy of Comrade Oshiomhole was maintaining legal speed limit when the incident occurred.

‘’This explains why the trailer, travelling in the same direction overran the Toyota Hilux vehicle off the road and still hit the SUV carrying Comrade Oshiomhole, causing substantial damage.’’

Alleging the accident was not ordinary, the media aide added: “Without prejudice to police investigations, eyewitnesses account of the incident suggest, and we believe rightly too, that this was an assassination attempt targeting Comrade Oshiomhole.”

“While we pray for the quick recovery of the injured policemen, we extend our condolences to the families of the departed.

“Comrade Oshiomhole has visited the injured policemen in the hospital and he deployed some of his aides to be on standby at the hospital to ensure that the wounded policemen are given the best medical attention possible.

“The case was immediately reported at the Ekiadolor Police Station and investigations are ongoing.

“We call on the security agencies to do everything possible to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, especially because of the threat to the life of Comrade Oshiomhole and the violence which has been directed towards him and the people around him in recent times.”
