NYSC extends service year of seven corps members in Osun

The National Youth Service Corps has extended the service year of seven corps members as four members absconded in Osun State.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Adewale Adegoke, on Thursday said, “1412 will pass out from Batch B stream II. Four members who absconded from the service would automatically repeat the service year, while seven others would serve an extension of service for various offences committed.”

He explained that the punitive measures for those erring corps members are to serve as a deterrent to other serving corps members.

Adegoke noted that the scheme frowns on truancy and indiscipline. “NYSC will not hesitate to correct such acts in accordance with the provisions of the NYSC Act.”

“Distribution of certificates to Batch B, Stream II, corps members has commenced on Thursday and the scheme has deployed officers to all the council areas in the state to ensure strict compliance with the social distancing measures for the days the exercise would last.

“Award winner for the set is Anaya Patience OS/19B/4020 served in Boluwaduro LGA. She produced a jingle on COVID-19 and also produced sanitizer and facemasks which were distributed to the host community.”

Nigerian government approves e-SIM trial for MTN

MTN Nigeria Plc (MTN) has announced the trial of e-SIM services on its network based on approvals received from the Federal Government.

The trial which kicked-off on Wednesday will run for one year and is open on a first come first served basis to a limited number of subscribers who own compatible devices, a statement from MTN said.

Chief Operating Officer, MTN Nigeria, Mazen Mroue, said the company was eager to get through the trial process so that the technology can be deployed for the benefit of every Nigerian.

“We are in a fast-paced digital age with new technological advancements driving the constantly changing landscape. Against this backdrop, customers depend on us to provide high quality, reliable and easy-to-use connectivity solutions.

“With the introduction of the e-SIM, we will offer customers a seamless and distinctive digital experience with new levels of flexibility, simplicity and convenience.

“This is a further demonstration of our firm commitment to delivering the benefits of a bold new digital world to our customers; and we will continue seeking new ways to provide solutions that address old and new challenges, making life a little easier and brighter,” Mroue stated.

He said MTN is spearheading e-SIM adoption in Nigeria as part of efforts to enable the digital economy.

Unlike the physical SIMs, e-SIMs are built into smartphones, devices and wearables. They support multiple profiles and allow customers to connect multiple numbers to their e-SIM devices.

Notwithstanding the sophistication of e-SIMs, the onboarding requirements are the same as are required for a physical SIM. Hence, SIM registration in line with existing regulatory prescriptions remains a requirement for activating a device embedded with an e-SIM.

e-SIMs are particularly useful for people who want to manage personal and business lines easily and effectively or want a separate profile for data.

The new technology will also be extremely convenient for frequent travellers and tourists, making it easier for them to opt for and keep a local subscription when visiting Nigeria.

Magu’ll be cleared of allegations, reinstated, says counsel

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday expressed confidence that he would be reinstated to office.

Magu, who was suspended last week by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over corruption allegations levelled against him at the ongoing proceedings of the Justice Ayo Salami-led presidential investigative panel, said the charges levelled against him were trumped up.

He spoke to our correspondent through his lawyer, Mr Wahab Shittu, who said he had his instruction to give an update on the probe to Nigerians.

Shittu said, “I have the instruction of Mr Magu to tell Nigerians that he is not against the ongoing probe.

“Mr Magu asked me to tell Nigerians that he is not against the probe. The allegations against him are trumped up. He strongly believes that his name will be cleared and he will be reinstated back to the office.”

Meanwhile, Shittu on behalf of Magu sent a letter to the panel denying a series of allegations reported in the media.

Specifically, he denied giving N4bn to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and giving N28m to Mr Femi Falana (SAN).

Both Osinbajo and Falana had separately denied the allegations.

The letter titled, ‘Publications prejudicial to the proceedings of this honourable panel,’ was sent to the panel on Thursday.

Shittu stated that the “serial falsehood publications in the media” in respect of matters  “never featured in the proceedings of this honourable panel.

He said, “The charges against our client are trumped-up allegations designed to tarnish his image and rubbish the credibility and image of the EFCC which has been stellar and outstanding under our client’s watch.

“Based on the above circumstances, our client was not given adequate time and facilities for his defence and his demand for a copy of the allegations against him has not been honoured till date.

“We appeal to the honourable panel to consider the above and uphold the fundamental rights to a fair hearing of our client.”

On the allegation of giving N4bn to Osinbajo, the letter read, “Our client strongly denies this falsehood against the respected Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Our client has never given the sum of N4bn or any sum at all to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, GCON, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as wrongly reported.”

He also described the allegation of giving N28m to Falana as “complete fabrication”.

He stated, “Our client never gave N28m or any amount to Mr Femi Falana SAN as maliciously reported.

“Our client also denies any link with a Kaduna-based bureau de change operator as alleged.”

Shittu said Magu “confirms that his house was searched last Monday in his absence while in custody, but no incriminating evidence was found. It is untrue as reported that some dollars and expensive jewellery and wristwatches were found. Our client states that the search into his house did not reveal any incriminating evidence or materials. The cars removed from his residence were official vehicles assigned to our client as acting chairman of the EFCC.”

The letter also stated that Magu had not been confronted with alleged illegal foreign exchange transactions and that “no such report was tendered by NFIU in any proceedings before this panel involving him till date.”

It added, “Our client states categorically that the maximum forex transactions he has been involved in are the sum of $10,000 till date.

“Our client also wishes to place on record that he has no link with a Kaduna-based bureau de change operator as erroneously reported in the publication.”

On the alleged N573m Dubai property, his lawyer said the allegation “is an outright falsehood and is denied by our client in unmistakable terms”.

The letter also denied the allegation of diversion of interest on recovered assets.

It stated, “Our client states that all recovered funds are lodged in the TSA account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

I won’t tolerate disrespect to National Assembly, Buhari warns Keyamo, other ministers

President Muhammadu Buhari says ministers and all heads of departments and agencies should at all times conduct themselves in ways that will not undermine the National Assembly as an institution, its leadership and members.

President Buhari said this on Thursday when he received in audience Senate President Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila at the State House, Aso Villa, Abuja.

Senate approves N168.8bn for FIRS Buhari dares NASS, backs Keyamo on recruitment The President, in a statement issued on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, re-emphasized his utmost respect for the National Assembly. He said that any disrespect to the institution by any member of the executive branch would not be accepted. In the course of their conversation, recent events at the National Assembly were highlighted.

The meeting, which lasted for almost an hour, was characterized by an engaging discussion on a range of key issues of national importance particularly the role of the legislature as a critical component in supporting their common goal and commitment towards improving the lives of the people of Nigeria. Buhari and the leaders of the National Assembly recognized and acknowledged that the executive and legislative arms of government are essential partners in the fulfilment of their mutually aligned goal of improving the lives of the Nigerian people, according to the statement. statement

The Minister of State for Labour, Productivity and Employment, Festus Keyamo, had on June 30, clashed with the federal lawmakers when he appeared before the joint committees of the National Assembly on Labour to brief them on the recruitment of 774,000 youths under the Special Public Works programme (SPW).

An argument over the composition of the selection of the committees of the scheme snowballed into war of words between the minister and the lawmakers. Thus, the federal lawmakers announced the suspension of the scheme.

Subsequently, President Buhari, on Tuesday, reportedly threw his weight behind the minister by giving him a go-ahead to continue with the exercise, despite the suspension by the lawmakers. Delaying Magu’s prosecution, threat to anti-graft war – PDP

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has urged the Federal Government to immediately charge Magu to court.

In a statement titled, ‘Fraud Allegations: PDP Demands Magu’s Immediate Arraignment in Court …Rejects Pat on Wrist Approach,’ signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Thursday, the PDP said the delay in arraigning Magu was raising concerns about the anti-graft war.

The PDP said, “The delay is heightening suspicion in the public space over alleged attempt to give Magu a soft landing in order to cover up for certain top officials of the Buhari administration as well as some leaders of the All Progressives Congress alleged to have been indicted by the suspended EFCC chairman.

“The expectation of Nigerians therefore is for the Federal Government to immediately arraign Magu before a court of competent jurisdiction and prosecute him in line with the dictates of our laws.”

COVID-19: Fintiri, Yari risk jail over airport protocol breach — FG

Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, says the Federal Government of Nigeria is investigating the breach of COVID-19 protocols at three domestic airports by some dignitaries.

He said if found guilty, they would “either go to jail of two months and above, pay a fine or get both sanctions combined.”
FG threatens to jail VIPs, others flouting airports protocols He said the jail could be up to 10 years. He said this in Abuja on Thursday at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria had accused Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, and a former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, of breaching airport protocols. The duo had, however, through their media aides, denied the allegations. Sirika said if investigations revealed that the VIPs did not flout the protocol as alleged by the FAAN, apologies would be tendered publicly to them.

“FAAN has escalated what has transpired. “These alleged unruly passengers included the former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, whom I spoke to yesterday [Wednesday] at length and the current governor of Adamawa, Ahmadu Fintiri. “Abdulaziz Yari was on Saturday in Kano. “And that of Fintiri was in Port Harcourt and Chief Nduka Obaigbena was also alleged here in Abuja. “Now, those are being investigated and if it is found that it was true, we’ll do the needful and if it’s found untrue, we would definitely apologize to these individuals.”

According to him, going through the Nigeria civil aviation regulations, there is a definition of unruly passenger. “It goes to say in part 17, 97, 1, that any passenger who becomes unruly at the airport terminal building or onboard a particular aircraft commits an offence. So, first it is an offence. “…

According to table two 9, (51) an unruly passenger behaviour requires the punishment of criminal referral for imprisonment for not less than two months. “So, it can be ten years. “So, if you‘re found to be unruly passenger because you’re a big man, VIP, the simplest thing we could do is to refer you to the police and they must, by law, prosecute you and it’ll be not less than two months. “And I’m sure you don’t want to be a criminal for one day.

“Even for one second, no one wants to be a criminal. “Please, VIPs, please, show that you’re a VIP by conducting yourself in the manner you’d want to be identified with.

“If you’re are caught, we have some videos on this unruly passengers who we’ll investigate and the punishment will be not less than two months of being criminally liable by a court of law,”

Sirika said. Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, on Thursday in Lagos, stressed the need for the front line staff, especially the airport security and health officials, to be courageous in carrying out their duties to ensure that every passenger, no matter the status, observes the protocols.

He said the National Assembly had resolved to abide by the protocols and would not allow anyone to unnecessarily endanger the lives of Nigerians.

Akpabio vs Nunieh: Of Sexual assault, juju oaths and other misconducts

A former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio

There have been many dirty fisticuffs in the Nigerian political arena and there are many simultaneous battles still going on. In terms of sheer grime and sleaze, none of these could match that between the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs,

Mr Godswill Akpabio and erstwhile Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Ms Joi Nunieh. Thugs invade Bauchi NUJ secretariat, disrupt APC factional press conference N40bn probe: Reps committee orders arrest of NDDC acting MD The huge sleazeballs of allegations flying back and forth between the two gladiators have left Nigerians, exhausted already from the reality of their lives, government failures and consistent bitter bickering between members of President Buhari’s government, completely baffled.

There have been allegations of corruption, abuse of public office and due process, nepotism, falsification of documents and various forms of misconducts.

These are common in political spats in Nigeria. But there have also been allegations of a sexual assault and physical violence (a slap), multiple marriages (how that is relevant information to Nigerians remains to be seen) and “character issues” coercion and juju oaths. This whole episode reads like a low-budget, badly scripted Nollywood movie.

Each of this allegation on its own merit could bring down governments and public officials in saner climes. Nigeria is not one of those places. This, however, does not mean that the issues should be treated with levity.

Newspaper coverage of the crisis has rightly focused on the allegations of corruption but it would seem that the allegations of sexual assault are not being given due attention. This is an era of #metoo and Nigeria is in the middle of a rape plague.

The senate has been pushing bills to address cases of sexual assault in the country. That senior public officials, like a minister and a former acting MD in a commission he should be supervising, are so scandalously entangled is worrying.

That the government (if you like the president) has not intervened, suspended the officials from office pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter, is equally telling. The allegations of corruption aside, because we have had so many of them over the years, the allegations of a minister sexually assaulting the head of a public commission is a serious issue. Ms Nunieh was very categorical in her allegation that Mr Akpabio tried to assault her in his Asokoro guest house, after which she decided not to attend any meeting with him outside of their designated offices.

She said she did not report the assault at the time because, in her words, she “handled him” by slapping him squarely across the face and because she was “not helpless.” Of course, the minister has categorically, in very clear terms, denied the allegations that he attempted to sexually assault her, that he received any slap on the face from her and insisted that he is not letting the matter go unchallenged. Both of them are lawyers and should know that such allegations are not bandied about without consequence. Both parties have threatened legal actions. Whether they will see these threats through is yet to be seen.

The sexual harassment part Sexual allegations are generally very serious, and where they involve the abuse of public office, they become issues of national concern. Former US President Bill Clinton almost lost his presidency over that, and long-term US congressman, Al Franken was forced to resign after allegations of groping.

Top politicians in the UK have also been forced to leave their positions, including a member of the royal family. Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth’s second son, was forced to slink into the shadows over his involvement in the Jeffery Epstein sex scandal.

Of course, some politicians have bullishly decided to ride out the storm. Donald Trump is one of them. But Mr Trump should be no one’s role model in matters of morality. In Nigeria, where women are grossly underrepresented in government and in public life, allegations of senior public officials trying to use their offices to gain sexual favours from their subordinates does not only constitute gross misconduct but also challenges the notion of inclusive governance. If such occurrences are not checked, women’s participation in nation building will always be limited.

Other allegations There is so much to unpack in the Akpabio vs Nunieh scandal, besides the sex allegation. For instance, that disturbing allegation of an individual trying to coerce a public official to swear a juju oath, using black magic, pledging loyalty to an individual rather than the country is indicative of a political culture that is worrying and has, over the years, side tracked the country’s development.

So also is Akpabio’s counter allegation that Ms Nunieh did not have the requisite qualification and yet, somehow, ended up in the office by virtue of an appointment letter he himself had signed. All these are issues that demand serious attention and that any government concerned about due process and fighting corruption ought to handle fairly and transparently. Already, this government has been tainted by the many episodes of very public laundering of very, very dirty linens and if there is a time to make a proper statement about intolerance to abuse of public offices, this very scandal, is an opportunity to do so.

The fact that members of the same government, who should be working together towards a common goal, are brawling publicly without being called to order is indicative of a bigger, more worrying problem and is summed up in one question: “Who is in charge of this house?”
