Preach On Family Planning, Sex Education, Religious Leaders Told –Chairman Interfaith Association On Family Planning

  • Preach on family planning, sex education, religious leaders told
  • Religious leaders in Ogun State have been asked to incorporate family planning and sex education messages into religious teachings as part of efforts to correct the misconceptions surrounding reproductive and family health.

The leaders, under the aegis of Interfaith Association on Family Planning and Childbirth Spacing, emphasised the need for the dissemination of right messages on family planning, especially by religious leaders, to their congregations.

The Ogun State Chairman of the Interfaith Coalition on Family Planning and Childbirth Spacing, Venerable Richard Akinboyewa, made the call on Sunday at the meeting of members of the association in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

Akinboyewa explained that the coalition, comprising clerics from Christian and Islamic religions and mission birth attendants, was a family planning advocacy group saddled with the responsibility of educating and enlightening people on the benefits of modern methods of family planning.

He said it had become imperative for religious leaders to incorporate family planning and sex education messages into their teachings to drastically reduce teenage pregnancy, maternal mortality rate and abortion, among others.

He asserted that both Christianity and Islam support family planning and childbirth spacing, saying that family planning did not promote promiscuity, as believed by some people.

His words, “We can preach family planning from the pulpits. At the inter-faith level, we have a preaching manual booklet with Biblical references that we make use of, where the bible supports family planning, and those are the places we use in passing across our messages.”

“We should preach about it (family planning), especially when we are holding marriage counselling for young people. When you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. So planning is very, very good.”

Akinboyewa disclosed that the state government was aware of the coalition’s activities, saying, “The Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Board are supporters of what we are doing and we have been working together to ensure safe family health.”

A member of the Advocacy Working Group (AWG) and Interfaith Coalition, Alhaja Hairat Olukemi Ogunmoye, quoting a verse from the Qur’an that a woman must stay two years after another delivery before conception, argued this showed that Islam also recognises family planning.

Many injured as farmers, herders clash in Oyo StateMany residents of Ikoyi-Ile, Orire Local Government, Oyo State, were on Saturday injured in a clash between them and herdsmen in the area.

The residents, most of them farmers, had threatened to resort to further self-help if the Oyo State government failed to protect them from suspected herdsmen they alleged had been terrorising their community.

The farmers alleged the herders had killed one of them, raped their minors, destroyed their farmlands and had been terrorizing their community, giving them sleepless nights.

A chieftaincy title holder in the local government, the Babalaje (chief trader) of Agbe, Chief Joseph Oyekola, told our correspondent that the herdsmen were “seriously disturbing” the farmers in the community and urged he state government to intervene.

Oyekola said, “We don’t know what to do. If we take any step to revenge, it might lead to bloodshed. We want the government to take the necessary steps. Our king, who is supposed to defend us, has failed in his duties; he is now supporting the herdsmen against us.

“Herdsmen cut off the hands of one of our workers on the farm. They destroyed our farm produce. Another farmer was macheted on the head and some others were injured, while two of our minors were raped.”

A farmer, Usman Daudu, alleged that herdsmen destroyed 20 hectares of his farmland on which he planted maize, yam and tomato, adding they also injured him on the head with cutlasses as he attempted to chase them away.

Another farmer, Dominic Gbegbi, said the herdsmen destroyed his produce and macheted him 14 times when they invaded his farm with their cows.

The Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile, Oba Abdul-Yekeen Atilola Oladipupo, however, said that he had been making efforts to initiate peaceful co-existence between the farmers and herders in the area.

Oba Oladipupo said, “We have tried to resolve the issue many times because it’s difficult to separate farmers from herders. We have been living together for a while. I have taken a lot of steps on the matter to find a lasting solution to it, but it seems my efforts are not enough, so we need government’s intervention.

“I’ve had series of meetings with all the Baales (local chiefs) around me to find a permanent solution to the issue. In fact, I even had meetings with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police and they assured me they would come to our aid.”

APC chieftain urges collaboration to develop Ekiti

APC chieftain urges collaboration to develop Ekiti - TODAY

The Ekiti All Progressives Congress (APC), United Kingdom chapter, has appealed to stakeholders to collaborate with Gov. Kayode Fayemi towards the development of the state.

The chapter’s chairman, Dr Lee Badeji, made the appeal in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

He added that the infighting among party members in the state was not necessary, stressing that there was the need for unity, if the state must remain relevant in the political arena ahead of the 2023 elections.

Badeji, however, noted that the political infighting in the state chapter, was not unconnected with the internal quibble among its stakeholders.

According to him, such atmosphere does not speak well for a political family, adding that there is need to forge a common political front.

This, he said, was critical to engender unity among politicians in the state, for the common good of all Ekiti at home and in the diaspora.

He added that as a leader, he was already working round the clock to unify all warring parties within the party in the state.

“My peace initiative is solely due to my position as the chairman of the state’s party in the UK to preach peace and unity among all leaders at home.

“I therefore call on all other party leaders in the state, including those who had left for one reason or the other, to allow for reconciliation and long lasting peace to reign.

“As the 2023 politicking commences in earnest, the role of Ekiti State is very pivotal in shaping the next electioneering in the country.

“However, we must put our house in order to be able to make meaningful and valuable impact in the months ahead,” he said.

Badeji noted the contributions of other political leaders in the state to forestall and sustain progress in the interest of all.

He added that such party leaders had over time provided good leadership at several points in their political sojourn in the state, saying that their contributions could not be undermined.

According to him, the individual contributions of such leaders had positively impacted the overall wellness of the residents.

“I am ready and willing to work with all in the overall interest of Ekiti.

“Truth remains Gov. Fayemi may not be perfect, no one is, and just like everyone too, Dr Badeji is no exception. But as human, I learn from my mistakes, make the necessary adjustment and move on.

“The same way can be said of the incumbent Gov. Fayemi, he is a man that learns from his mistakes and always willing to learn and listen to the opinions of others,” he said.

Badeji lauded the state party leaders and commended their efforts so far, at ensuring that the interest of the people remained paramount.

Mr Olusegun Agbalajobi, had also in a statement, commended Badeji for his peace initiative, saying that he was a true son of Ekiti and a good leader that should be emulated.

“I appreciate the mediation you have undertaken without any push from anyone. I am ready and willing to work with you in the overall interest of Ekiti,” the statement quoted Agbalajobi as saying.

Akwa Ibom council polls: Protests trail ‘imposition’ of candidates by PDP

A storm of protests has broken out in Akwa Ibom State over alleged imposition of unpopular candidates on the faithful by the hierarchy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The selection process of aspirants to fly the flag of the ruling PDP in the state has been dogged by alleged underhand dealings, fetish oath-taking, among other dubious means.

Specifically, youth from Mbo and Urue Offong/Oruko local government areas of the state have spoken against the imposition of Chairmanship candidates on them.

The youth in Mbo have questioned the rationale for picking the incumbent chairman, Asukwo Eyo for a second term when his record in the first term was nothing to write home about even as their counterparts in Urue Offng/Oruko also faulted the imposition of Mrs Precious Selong as the consensus Chairmanship candidate on the people, instead of Colonel Sampson Edet (rtd), their choice candidate.

A youth leader, Ben Okung, said the wrong selection of aspirant may stagnate the progress and popularity of the PDP in the council area.

Okung who is a former Akwa Ibom House of Assembly aspirant under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) said he returned to the PDP to ensure qualified persons were given the mantle of leadership, noting that the choice of Mrs Selong as consensus candidate was unaccepted.

“The entire youths and concerned elders of Urueoffong Oruko came out to express their minds through a peaceful protest informing the PDP leadership in the state and their listening Governor that they don’t want Mrs Precious Selong as their chairperson.

“We are calling on our Governor who is the leader of the party to provide a level playing ground for all aspirants and their choice candidate, Colonel Sampson Edet (rtd) so that the people of the local government can be vindicated if their choice does not leave up to expectations.

Also speaking, party loyalist, Mr Emmanuel Okon frowned at the alleged removal of Colonel Sampson on the list of cleared aspirants by the party.

He said it was very disappointing and a slap on their face as Mrs Selong as Vice Chairperson and Transition Chairperson of the local government for three years respectively cannot point to a single project.

Another PDP stalwart in the council area, Elder Ante Ante explained that since the creation of the local government area in 1991 till date, they have nothing to show for the long existence of the local government.

Ante emphasized that local government creation was done to transform rural communities to urban and semi-urban cities and not for personal investment.

He called on Governor Udom Emmanuel, listen to their plea by allowing all aspirants test their popularity at the LG Chairmanship elections primaries slated for August 24, 2020.

“For the long years of existence, we have had local government chairmen both elected and appointed and none of them have been able to move the local government to its expected height”, he said.

But the Publicity Secretary of the party, Borono Bassey absolved the party of any wrongdoing, saying that it adopted internal democracy in screening the aspirants.
