Federal Government, in conjunction with Lagos State Government (LASG) ordered the stoppage of barge operations

The Lagos Marina is set to regain its beauty and serenity, with the planned stoppage of barge operations along the coastline, according to a statement issued yesterday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso.

The federal government, in conjunction with Lagos State Government (LASG), yesterday ordered the stoppage of all such operations, which have desecrated the once beautiful and peaceful Marina coastline.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is to revoke barge approvals granted some companies operating in Lagos.

The Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, and the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who defied the early morning downpour to inspect activities around the Marina coastline, made the stop-work order during an unscheduled visit to the Marina.

They went around the coastline, seeing the long row of trucks and containers that have constituted health and security hazards on the Marina.

Amaechi and Sanwo-Olu kept on shaking their heads on seeing the devastation of the coastline that used to be the pride of the state, attracting crowds of visitors.
Amaechi and Sanwo-Olu found the “unwholesome” activities on the coastline “shocking” and “unacceptable.”

The minister spoke of an urgent need to sanitise the entire Marina coastline and restore its tranquility and beauty.

He ordered that trucks must immediately stop coming to Marina to load.

Amaechi said the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) did not grant anyone the permission to carry out barging operations, insisting that all such activities must stop immediately.

“The Federal Ministry of Transport has agreed with Lagos State Government to ensure that whoever is making use of Marina coastline should stop. We have agreed with Commissioner of Police to stop those using the roads and we have agreed with NPA to cancel all barge permits pending when each person will come back to NPA, NIWA and Lagos State Government to renew such approval,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu directed the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to arrest and prosecute anyone who flouts the order to stop unauthorised activities on the Marina.

He said the state government would do everything to bring sanity to the coastline.

“We are also talking to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing because we understand that some of the approvals were from the Federal Ministry of Works. So, we are also taking up that responsibility and we would do what we need to do,” the governor said.

Also at the inspection were the Managing Director of NPA, Ms. Hadiza Bala-Usman, and representatives of NIWA, Ministries of Works and Waterfront as well as the Police.

United Kingdom To deploy observers in Edo and Ondo States to monitor the governorship elections

The United Kingdom yesterday said it would deploy observers in Edo and Ondo States to monitor the governorship elections, and threatened sanction, including a travel ban to the United Kingdom, against sponsors of violence in the two elections.

The UK said the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, had met with the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The decisions of the UK Government were contained in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by the High Commission to Nigeria.

The statement said: “As a friend and partner of Nigeria, we are closely following the lead up to the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states scheduled for September 19 and October 10, respectively.

“These elections are important, both as an essential element of effective governance within both states and an indicator of the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“Our High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has held meetings with leaders of the two main political parties, the APC and PDP.

“The discussions focused on the need for the parties’ leaders to prevail on supporters to avoid violence before and after the elections and we welcome the Edo candidates’ signatures of the National Peace Committee and INEC convened a peace accord yesterday.

“We will be deploying observation missions to both the Edo and Ondo elections and supporting civil society led observation.

“The UK takes a strong stand against election-related violence and, just as we did in the general election in 2019, will continue to take action against individuals we identify as being responsible for violence during the elections.

“This could include restrictions on their eligibility to travel to the UK, restrictions on access to UK based assets or prosecution under international law.

“The UK will continue to provide support and engagement as we move towards these elections. We urge INEC, the Police and all other agencies involved to work together to deliver free, fair and credible elections.”

Pastor Emmanuel Iren clears air on finding his wife sexy during prayer

Pastor Emmanuel Iren who is the lead pastor of Celebration Church International in Lagos, has cleared the air on the statement he made few days back.

The cleric started a convo when he revealed on social media that he find his wife sexy whenever she prays and can’t wait for her to come discuss with him after the prayer.

While some social media users wished to get married soon so as to have such experience, some were quick to question why he would have such thought during prayer.

In a new post on his Twitter, Pastor Emmanuel Iren has now spoken more on the statement, stating that he wasn’t referring to fervent prayer.

See what he wrote below;

Hey fellas,
It’s been few days since this tweet of mine went viral (on instablog, Tundeednut and a few other platforms).
After going through some of the reactions, I decided to talk about it a little.

First, I’m encouraged that majority of the responses were “God when” responses.
“How’s that’s encouraging?” you ask. Well the fact that my marriage could stir people to want to get married as opposed to the popular dreadful narrative about marriage is humbling.

Make no mistake. My marriage is far from perfect. But my wife and I are committed to trusting God and loving each other. To know that people find our sincere attempt at that encouraging is humbling.

Other folks were bothered by the idea of a man admiring his wife whilst she prayed. Someone even implied that I won’t “make heaven” because of that.

Maybe their imagination of the tweet was an exaggeration of what actually happened. Or it’s a theological problem. Let’s discuss.

You see, not all prayers are the same in fervency, duration or even importance. Jesus often left his disciples to pray on mountains but also some times prayed in-between conversations with the same disciples Luke 10:19-22, John 12:26-28.

Some prayers are so sacred that no form of interaction with anyone is welcome. But sometimes, we worship and pray whilst we do other things e.g chores.
If you thought my wife was in an utterly FERVENT mood of prayer and I winked at her, you are wrong. I wouldn’t do that

Nonetheless, even if I did, the argument might be made that doing so would have been distracting, but not that it would have been sinful.

My full thoughts on this will have to be a conversation for another day.

Let me add that a tweet about a man admiring his praying wife isn’t the problem of the media space today. I could argue that it’s the solution!

In a world full of shallow portrayal of sex, a man admiring HIS WIFE is a helpful narrative.

In a world where the physical attributes of a woman is almost portrayed to be all there is to attraction, I find my praying woman attractive.

By all means, get yourself a beautiful woman like I did. But in all, a woman who loves the lord is “a treasure”.

Btw, by “sexy” I meant attractive, which isn’t an entirely strange usage of the word today. Come on. No one truly “goes off” on a praying woman.

The tweet was more on attraction than on sex.

Whilst it might have seemed like I couldn’t wait for my wife to finish praying so we could have sex, I didn’t mean that literally at all, neither has any such thing ever happened
That being said, let me reiterate that beyond physical beauty there’s a lot more to desire in a woman

– intelligent conversations
– a kind heart
– AND the fear of God

That’s the main point

I pray that you have the home of your dreams, being example of a good marriage and pleasing God whilst you’re at it. Amen

Nigerian lesbian movie dares censors board, set for release

The filmmakers are planning a surprise online release to catch the regulators off-guard. Nigerian lesbian movie “Ife” produced by Pamela Adie and directed by Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim is set for release despite a stern warning from Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) that the film (which means “love” in Yoruba language violates the country’s strict laws on homosexuality.

But according to a report by the BBC, the filmmakers have decided to get the film across to the Nigerian audience. To get around, the statement says the filmmakers are planning a surprise online release to catch the regulators off-guard.

According to the Censors Board boss, Adebayo Thomas, both the producer and the director, and indeed all involved in the film could be risking jail terms of 14 years sentence for promoting homosexuality in a country where same-sex relationships are forbidden.

BBC in the report says the filmmakers are planning a private screening in Lagos at the end of the month for which they feel they do not need the nod of the regulators to go ahead. It was also reported that the film is being billed for international premiere in Canada in October of this year.

“If a lesbian woman does appear in a standard Nollywood movie they are often portrayed as being possessed, influenced by bad friends or forced into homosexuality and always needing “saving”, she told the BBC.

“You rarely see stories about LGBT people, especially about queer women that speak to the realities of our lives. “Ife was made to bridge the gap and to get the conversation going in Nigeria.”

“Ife” is a story about two women, played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh and Cindy Amadi falling in love as they spend three days together. They “then have their love tested by the realities of being in a same-sex relationship in a country like Nigeria”, according to the publicity for the film.

“Before now, we have been told one-sided stories. What we are doing with this film is normalising the queer experience, we are normalising the LGBT romance. It will begin to erase that shame that LBQ [lesbian, bisexual and queer] women face,” Adie told the BBC.

The lesbian, gay, bis*xual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community in Africa is becoming increasingly vocal and visible, thanks to the internet providing a space for films, talk shows and websites.

But that has not stopped filmmakers from getting into trouble with authorities. The head of the NFVCB said there was no space for Ife or other homosexual movies in Nigeria, citing the law.

“There’s a standing law that prohibits homosexuality, either in practice or in a movie or even in a theatre or on stage. If it’s content from Nigeria, it has to be censored,” Mr Thomas told the BBC.

He said that whatever the platform was, “as long as it’s Nigerian content and it’s telling a Nigerian story, then we have a right to it”.

But there is no plan for large-scale screenings of Ife in Nigerian cinemas or selling the DVD, as the producers want to make it available online as pay-on-demand.

But even that will get them into trouble with the regulators.

“If it did not pass through NFVCB and it is released, the filmmakers will be prosecuted according to the law,” Mr Thomas said. As long as it’s Nigerian content, we will pull it down because we have collaborations with Google, YouTube and other key players.”

But that has not deterred the producers and Adie says her team will continue as planned, as they believe they have done nothing wrong and do not plan to seek permission for an online release.

This is not the first time an LGBTQ-themed movie has fallen foul of regulators on the continent.

“Stories of Our Lives”, a collection of five short films based on stories of LGBTQ life in Kenya was banned in 2014 for being “contrary to national norms”.

This was also the fate of Rafiki, Kenya’s first film about a lesbian relationship, which went on to be the East African nation’s first film to premiere at the Cannes film festival and also receive an Oscar nomination.

“Inxeba/The Wound”, a South African film about a relationship between two men in the context of the Xhosa initiation ritual was also banned from mainstream South African cinemas in 2018.

Despite the set-backs, some in the LGBTQ community in Africa say they are gradually gaining confidence and acceptance and link it to the increased visibility in films and literature which are encouraging greater tolerance among younger generations.

Obasa said that among the newly created sections were Sections 24 and 29 which deal with fund of the commission and payment of salaries, pensions, other remuneration and allowances payable to members and staff of the assembly respectively.

International travelers who are positive are arriving Nigeria with fake COVID-19 negative test results- PTF raises alarm

The Presidential Taskforce PTF on COVID-19 has raised an alarm that some International travelers who are COVID-19 positive, are coming into the country with fake COVID-19 PCR negative results.

Recall that the Federal government announced that one of the protocols to be obeyed as the international airspace reopens is for all inbound passengers to undergo a COVID0-19 test 72 hours before arriving Nigeria and that the result must be negative.

However, the National Co-Ordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, today said fraudulent activities have been noticed in some of the test results presented on arrival. According to Sani, some travellers arrived in the country with negative COVID-19 test results but were later discovered to be COVID-19 positive. He stated this when he and other members of the taskforce appeared before the Joint Senate Committee on Health and Aviation on the testing procedures following the reopening of the International airspace.

When we started the evacuation flights, the arrangement then was that people coming into the country will need to have a negative COVID-19 PCR result, with the test validity put at the time in seven days.

There were indications from some specific countries where we had up to 40% of the passengers in the single flight coming in with a negative COVID-19 PCR result and subsequently being tested and found positive''he said

Sani said the test results presented by inbound travellers can no longer be trusted. He said 13 countries have been identified to have travelers with fake COVID-19 test results and the Federal government has written to the embassies to correct this anomaly.

I’ll challenge Malami’s illegal amendment of NBA rules -Femi Falana

A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has said he will challenge the illegal amendment of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2007 by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Falana said this in a statement on Sunday titled, ‘Clarifications of My Stand on the Purported Amendment of RPC by AGF’.

Malami had amended the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2007 by deleting sections 9(2), 10, 11, 12, and 13 thereby removing the requirement for NBA stamp and seal on court processes and giving everyone – including non-lawyers – the right to submit court processes.

The move is also expected to affect the NBA’s revenue as the sale of stamps is one of its major sources of income.

Falana had in an earlier statement said the NBA failed to live up to its responsibilities when it left the General Council of the Bar in the hands of the AGF in the last 15 years.

He had said since the NBA never complained when the then AGF, Bayo Ojo (SAN), unilaterally introduced the use of stamps in 2007, then the association should not complain now that Malami has been unilaterally removed.

In a fresh statement on Sunday, however, Falana said he had sought further clarification and discovered that Ojo actually did not take the decision unilaterally but only after consulting with the general council.

He said, “My position on the 2007 RPC was anchored on the preamble wherein it is stated: ‘In the exercise of power conferred on me by section 12(4) of the Legal Practitioners Act 1990, as amended, and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I, Bayo Ojo, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice/Chairman General Council of the Bar hereby Make the following Rules.’

“However, I have read the clarifications credited to Prof. Ernest Ojukwu (SAN) and Lawal Rabal (SAN) to the effect that the 2007 RPC was properly made by the GCB. I have also spoken to both of them on phone for confirmation of their positions. I verily believe them in toto.

“Therefore, notwithstanding my opposition to the Stamp and Seal on ideological grounds I wish to reiterate my position that the 2020 RPC was illegally made by the AGF, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN). To that extent, I will take appropriate steps to fight this latest act of unpardonable impunity emanating from the office of the AGF.”

Lawyers Begin Petition To Strip Malami Of SAN Rank, Says the use of the stamps is no longer necessary.

Some lawyers under the Nigeria Bar Association, have started a petition to strip the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami of his Senior Advocate of Nigeria title.

The petition, registered by a lawyer, Izu Aniagu on change.org, had received 378 signatures.

The petitioner claimed among others that the AGF unilaterally deleted the provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) which provide for stamp and seal as well as bar practice fee for government lawyers.

Izu further stated that Malami does not have such power.

Malami was conferred with the SAN rank, in 2008, 16 years after being called to the Bar.

He courted controversy last week when he purportedly amended the RPC for Legal Practitioners 2007, removing the requirement for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) stamp and seal on court processes.

Further report revealed that Malami also seemingly abolished the requirement of payment of annual practice fees by government lawyers.

Membership of the NBA has been compulsory for all lawyers and the stamps and seals were sold at N4, 000 for 72 pieces and were given upon payment of NBA dues.

Without the stamp, a lawyer could not submit any document or letter to the court and the sale of the stamp and seal was one of the major sources of NBA’s revenue.

However, with the amendment of the process by Malami, the use of the stamps is no longer necessary.

The explanatory note to the Instrument suggested that it was done to bring the RPC into conformity with the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act, the Law Officers Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

This is the second time the AGF will be facing attempts to strip him of his title.

In July 2019, Malami was reported to have agreed to appear before the disciplinary panel of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee to face two petitioners seeking to strip him of the title for alleged misconduct.

A petition was filed against him by some family members of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, while another one was filed against him by a firm ‘Interstellar’.

He said some of the players would get into the national team and represent Nigeria in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I was the first female he got in contact with and we were talking about recruiting other females. I went to redemption camp for the first time in 2016 to play basketball

He showed me the court and even introduced me to an acquaintance as his daughter after the man said we looked alike. All i wanted to do was play basketball and get the opportunity to play in Tokyo 2020 Olympics but on the 2nd or 3rd visit (can't remember) after about an hour.
at his office before going to the court (he was busy at the time), He said he wanted to see the pictures on my phone, and i gave it to him. Then he showed me a quote i had saved about loving fiercely.... and said I should send it to him which i did via Whatsapp.
He handed my phone back to me & after some time came to where i was standing (i was looking at some things he pasted on his memo board), he sat on the chair & told me to sit on his lap. I said i can't & then he pulled me to his lap and said i should kiss him, i said i can't.
He said he wanted to kiss my pink lips (he had made a remark on my lips through WhatsApp before but i didn't pay attention to it then, a lot of people talk about it and i take it as a compliment).
