Passengers to pay double as Abuja-Kaduna train resumes Wednesday

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has announced that the Abuja-Kaduna train service would resume on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

Ameachi disclosed this during the test run of newly acquired coaches to be used on the corridor.

“We are being pressured to resume train services before Sallah celebration.

“Also, upon the resumption of the train service, hourly train operations will commence on the corridor.” the minister confirmed.

Train operations were shut down in March 2020 as part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Recall that the Nigerian Railways Corporate (NRC) had recently acquired ten rolling stock on the corridor.

Double price of tickets

The minister also revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the doubling of tickets cost on the Abuja-Kaduna rail service.

Mr Amaechi said the tickets should have been more expensive but the president intervened.

He said, “President Buhari approved the reviewed fares as follows: economy N3000, business class N6000.

“We even proposed higher fare but the president approved that we should leave it at that price.”

Asked if the fare wasn’t prohibitive, he said: “Most people using the train can afford to pay the fare and most people are of the opinion that it’s nothing compared to the risk of kidnappers on the road.”

On when the Ibadan-Kano rail project will resume, he said; “We are still waiting for money.”

On the commercial activities on Itakpe to Warri, he said “the axis is more lucrative than the Abuja-Kaduna because, by the time the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline project starts, they will use the facility to convey the pipes from Warri seaport to Itakpe but in terms of passenger burden, we have moved from 300 passengers per day to 4500 passengers per day.

“So, in terms of passenger volume, the Abuja-Kaduna railway is higher.”

On the Lagos railway completion date, Ameachi said: “We need about 1000 workers to work on Ebutte Metta station and we are only working with ten.”

“We had targeted May and they were working towards May but unfortunately, COVID-19 came.

“So, we told them to complete the small stations,” he noted.

Doctors to commence strike over hazard allowances, salary shortfall

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has threatened to resume its suspended industrial action on August 17 if the federal government does not meet its demand.

The association gave the ultimatum on Saturday in a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting and scientific conference in Gombe.

“The association resolved to extend the suspension of her strike action by three weeks to give government time to address her demands.

“Failure to adequately address these concerns will leave the association with no choice than to resume the suspended strike on Monday the 17th of August 2020,” NARD said in the communique signed by Dr. Sokomba Aliyu, Dr.Bilqis Muhammad and Dr. Egbogu Stanley, the president, Secretary General and Publicity Secretary of the association respectively.

The demands

The demands of the association include the immediate resignation or removal of the Chief Medical Director of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Professor Henry Ugboma, for fraud and administrative rascality, and unconditional reinstatement of the suspended UPTH Association of Resident Doctors (ARD)’s executives led by Dr. Solomon Amadi.

Other demands are; that hospitals be provided with funds to sustain provision of the needed personal protective equipment, immediate implementation and funding of the medical residency training act as agreed, and payment of salary shortfall to her members.

NARD also demanded payment of COVID- 19 hazard inducement allowance to her members which it said was now long overdue and implementation of the Medical Residency Training Act to ensure adequate remuneration of state health workers.

The association also called on the federal government and National Assembly to investigate the non enrollment of healthcare workers for Group Life Insurance, and non-payment of Death-in-Service benefits to the next-of-kin of its fallen heroes despite claims of payment to insurance companies.

“NEC demands immediate payment of arrears of consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage owed some doctors and other health workers.

“We also demand appropriate compensation of our members in State Health Institutions,” the association added.

NARD said,, during the meeting its NEC deliberated on her suspended industrial action with a view to appraise the response of the government to issues that necessitated industrial dispute but observed continued shortage of supply of PPEs and funding to various tertiary health institutions.

It said it also observed that payment of COVID-19 hazard inducement allowance was commenced and was abruptly suspended immediately the NARD strike was suspended, among others.

The deputy governor of the state, Dr.Kelechi Igwe, was in charge of the distribution.

The distribution was, however, stopped after some hours.

Addressing journalists at the end of the monitoring, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kenneth Ugbala, said: “The reason his Excellency, the Deputy Governor, said that the sharing of the palliatives should stop but continue tomorrow was because the items arrived some of the council headquarters very late.

“Again, we got information that some hoodlums have already positioned themselves in some areas to hijack the palliative.

“So, the exercise will continue today [Sunday],” he said.

Our correspondent, who was at Amuzu Community Secondary School, observed that items shared were two sachets of noodles and a 5Kg bag of rice to each beneficiary.

Also shared was a sachet of tomato puree, 50 Cl of bottled groundnut oil per person and a packet of cube sugar which was shared by two persons in the centre.

The distribution of palliatives will also continue today Sunday in the other two senatorial zones of the state.

Nigerians abroad remit over $25bn annually – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigerians in the diaspora brought over $25 billion annually as home remittances to the Nigerian economy through official and non-formal channels over the past three years.

Buhari spoke in a video message to commemorate this year’s Diaspora Day observed on July 25 of every year.

The president, who urged to them not to abandon their fatherland in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, implored Nigerians in the diaspora to actively participate in the country’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts.

“This (home remittances) is about 6.0% of our annual GDP and upwards of 80% of our annual budget.

“This has impacted on livelihoods of Nigerians in terms of education, health, housing and estate development, industry, trade and investments, agriculture and technology/skills transfer.

“In terms of diaspora home remittances, Nigeria is rated as number one in sub-Saharan Africa and this is still growing especially with the advocacy and mobilization programmes of the newly established Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM),’’ he said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.

Building Collapse Claims 2 in Abuja Pregnant Woman, 8 Children Among Dead

It was gathered that the first incidence occurred around Unguwar-Gwari within Rafin-Sanyi area on the outskirts of the town, where the woman resided along with her husband and children, and a nearby house where two persons died.

The heavy rain was reported to have started around 4am and continued till 7am. The chairman of Suleja council, Malam Abdullahi Maje, said the remains of the deceased were taken to the Suleja General Hospital morgue after a search mission.

The Suleja Zonal Coordinator of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Umar Abdullahi, said three children and their sibling lost their lives when the flood forced its way into their compound around Living Faith Church area in Madalla, a neighboring town.

Many houses, vehicles, and other valuables were submerged in the flood, even as some people were declared missing.
The husband of the pregnant woman, Iboma ThankGod Ibedike, told our reporter that the fence collapsed after which the house also went down. “I went outside to ascertain the level of the water from outside the compound when another wall attached to the building also collapsed, that was when the flood took away my family members,” he said.

The children included; Latifat, Rahamat, Abdulateef and Rabiu. A neighbour of the family, Israel Musa, said the incident took place around 3:12 am after heavy flood submerged houses near a river in the area. He said the woman and her four children were sleeping in their room when they were trapped by rising waters. “Before rescue could come their way, the flood had already taken over the house,” he said.

He said the corpse of the deceased woman’s first son was later recovered from a short distance from the bank of the river and was later buried.

“But the corpses of the woman and her children are yet to be recovered as efforts are still on to see how they will be recovered,” he added. Another resident, Samson Iyah, whose four houses were submerged, said he was still in shock.

He said flood destroyed the four houses which he built with mud block, and destroyed valuables, while appealing to the FCT administration to come to the aid of victims. Iyah, added that the flood crossed over the Abuja-Lokoja highway, which he said forced some motorists to turn back.

Another victim, Abdullahi Yakubu, said his house and that of his three neighbours were destroyed and valuables such as electronics, mattresses and some other items were destroyed by the flood. Our reporter gathered that the torrential downpour covered the Gwagwalada-Abuja-Lokoja road forcing some motorists coming form both lanes to park.
2 feared dead, 6 injured, 10 trapped in Abuja collapsed building Two people were feared dead when a building collapsed at the Panteka area of Dawaki, an Abuja urban slum along the Kubwa Expressway at about 10am yesterday, witnesses said. A witness, Usman, said the victims were Niger Republic nationals working at a construction site.

He said they were water vendors but engaged in menial jobs at construction sites since the beginning of the rainy season.

One of the injured victims, Hamisu Abdullahi, said: “I cannot say what happened, I was on the second floor working when it happened. I was rescued alongside others. I cannot say the number of people trapped but there were six that were taken to hospital for treatment.” Abdullahi said he was fortunate because he was at the top of the building and was not trapped.

The Director-General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Abbas Idriss, said 10 people were trapped in the building.

He said one was injured while three were rescued and taken to the hospital. “We cannot identify their nationalities yet. The public should always follow the approved building plan, they should not contravene the masterplan. Should they want to change, they should consult the necessary government agencies,” he said.

The Director, Department of Development Control of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Muktar Galadima, said he was not aware of an approved building plan for the building. He said due process was not followed by the developer, as he built the two-storey building within two weeks, contravening engineering standards.

“On the 17th of this month when our officers were monitoring the development, they noticed the modification of the building from a bungalow to a two-storey building so they served him a stop-work notice. Taking advantage of the weekend, the developer resumed work, unfortunately, this incident happened,” he said.

He said legal action would be taken against the developer while integrity tests would be conducted on surrounding structures.

Nollywood Actress, Ayo Adesanya Says She's Ready To Remarry At 51

Veteran Nollywood actress, director, and producer, Ayo Adesanya has revealed that she is ready to give marriage another shot after her first trial packed up years ago.

According to mom-of-one who recently turned 51, if she finds a ‘good man’, nothing can stop her from giving it another shot.

In a recent chat with Punch, the stunning mom shares what she expects from a man who would be lucky to walk her down the aisle again.

Adesanya told the news outlet: “Yes, I will give marriage a try if I see a good man. If I find what I like, why wouldn’t? Nothing can stop me from getting married again if the opportunity comes.

“I don’t think it’s too late for marriage at 51. Haven’t you seen people who gave birth to babies even at 60? Nothing is impossible for God.

“I know a very beautiful lady that got married at the age of 50 and had her baby at 55. Things like that made me include that it is never too late to do anything. With the way life is structured, nothing is impossible.

“I was once in entanglement and I’ve tried to be careful over the years. I have seen quite a lot of interested men but it’s very difficult to know who is true and who is not. However, one cannot be too careful because love is supposed to be unconditional. One can be very careful and still make mistakes.

“I’m not giving myself a time frame (to get married) because I’m having the best time of my life. I am at peace with myself and I know that the peace can continue only if I see the right person.”

Adesanya maintained that though she was still open to marriage, she didn’t consider it a do-or-die affair.

She said, “If marriage doesn’t come, one would still live one’s life. It is not a do-or-die affair, and not everybody would get married. When people get married and stay in it, I consider them lucky. These days, marriages don’t last. When one hears the things happening everywhere, getting ‘entangled’ would be scary. People that are not married still live happily.

‘’On the other hand, some people are friends and lovers, and it works out well for them. Marriage only makes it official and strengthens the commitment.’’
