Dr. John Emeka Akude, a Nigerian political scientist has made history after been the first black man to be elected member of Cologne’s City Council in Germany.

This makes him the first Councillor of African origin in Cologne, Germany’s 4th biggest city with about 1 million inhabitants.

On Sunday 13 September, millions of voters went to the polls in towns and cities across North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, to vote for Lord Mayors, Mayors, Councillors and the Integration Councils.

Both ran on the platform of Klima Freunde (Friends of the Climate).

International travelers who are positive are arriving Nigeria with fake COVID-19 negative test results- PTF raises alarm

The Presidential Taskforce PTF on COVID-19 has raised an alarm that some International travelers who are COVID-19 positive, are coming into the country with fake COVID-19 PCR negative results.

Recall that the Federal government announced that one of the protocols to be obeyed as the international airspace reopens is for all inbound passengers to undergo a COVID0-19 test 72 hours before arriving Nigeria and that the result must be negative.

However, the National Co-Ordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, today said fraudulent activities have been noticed in some of the test results presented on arrival. According to Sani, some travellers arrived in the country with negative COVID-19 test results but were later discovered to be COVID-19 positive. He stated this when he and other members of the taskforce appeared before the Joint Senate Committee on Health and Aviation on the testing procedures following the reopening of the International airspace.

When we started the evacuation flights, the arrangement then was that people coming into the country will need to have a negative COVID-19 PCR result, with the test validity put at the time in seven days.

There were indications from some specific countries where we had up to 40% of the passengers in the single flight coming in with a negative COVID-19 PCR result and subsequently being tested and found positive''he said

Sani said the test results presented by inbound travellers can no longer be trusted. He said 13 countries have been identified to have travelers with fake COVID-19 test results and the Federal government has written to the embassies to correct this anomaly.

FG bans alcohol in sachets and small polythene due to it's negative effects on public health

Two days after the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) cautioned the public on the consumption of alcohol in sachet, the Federal Government has banned alcohol in polyethylene terephthalate and glass bottles.

This is contained in a statement by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency on Saturday, September 12, 2020.

In a statement on Friday, September 11, 2020, the NAFDAC boss had advised Nigerians to avoid unregistered alcoholic products.

According to NAFDAC, the Federal Ministry of Health is concerned about the high incidence of substance and alcohol abuse and its negative effects on public health.

The statement reads, “NAFDAC under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Health, once again, wishes to bring to the attention of the general public, concerns relating to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in sachets, small volume glass and PET bottles.

“These concerns relate to negative effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption on public health and on the safety and security of the public, alcohol being a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties.

“Uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles has been put forward as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society.

“The World Health Organisation reports that alcohol consumption contributes to three million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people.

“NAFDAC with full support of the Federal Ministry of Health has continued to exercise its regulatory responsibilities by ensuring that all alcoholic beverages and other regulated products approved by the agency meet set standards of quality, safety and wholesomeness.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is concerned about the high incidence of substance and alcohol abuse in the country and NAFDAC, being the competent authority and working with relevant stakeholders, is increasing efforts to stem this.

With regard to alcohol, major stakeholders have been engaged at the highest level and are already sensitised to the issue. To this end, several interventions jointly agreed upon by major stakeholders are being undertaken and as a first step, no new products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles above 30 per cent ABV will be registered by NAFDAC.

“Furthermore, to reduce availability and curb abuse, effective January 31 2020, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume PET and glass bottles are to reduce production by 50 per cent of capacity prior to January 2020. The overall goal is a complete phase out of high concentration alcohol in sachets and small PET and glass bottles in line with the agreed roadmap or earlier.

It would be recalled that NAFDAC recently expressed its commitment to prevent young people and other vulnerable and high risk group from easy access to alcohol in the country.

Lai Mohammed explains how Buhari prevented Nigeria from becoming a failed state after a long stretch of rapacious and rudderless leadership.

The Federal Government on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s assumption of office in 2015 prevented Nigeria from becoming a failed state after a long stretch of rapacious and rudderless leadership.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja, said Buhari came into office when the country was under occupation by terrorists and the treasury was wantonly being looted.

“President Buhari came into office at a time that a swathe of the country’s territory was under occupation, a period when many Nigerian towns and cities, including the capital acity of Abuja, were a playground for insurgents.

“It was a moment that the nation’s wealth had been looted dry, with little or nothing to show for the nation’s huge earnings, especially in the area of infrastructure,” he said.

The minister said it was therefore a cruel irony that those who frittered away a great opportunity to put Nigeria on a sound socio-economic footing at a time of financial buoyancy were those accusing government of not performing.

He added that it was unfortunate that those who planted the seed of the insecurity in some parts of the country were the same ones pointing an accusing finger at a reformist government.

The minister, who said that the country was going through a lot of challenges, however, pointed out that the situation would have been worse but for the deft management of resources and unprecedented fight against corruption by the Buhari government.

He added that the determined battle against insurgency and banditry as well as the abiding courage of the president in piloting the ship of state had saved the nation from a worse situation.

Mohammed said contrary to the position of a certain political leader, Nigeria is not a failed state.

He described the nation as one courageously tackling its challenges and building a solid infrastructure that would serve as the basis for socio-economic development.

According to the minister, Nigeria is unrelenting in battling insecurity and working hard to ensure the greatest prosperity for the greatest number of people.

The minister also said no government in the history of the country had done so much with so little as the Buhari administration had been doing.

“With 60 per cent less national income, the administration is making progress on all fronts and setting the country on the path of

sustainable growth and development,” he said

The minister said while naysayers were hyping the instances of insecurity in the country, they had forgotten that the country could have been overrun by insurgents and bandits if the president had not rallied regional and international allies to tackle headlong the Boko Haram insurgency.

He recalled that “bombs were going off like firecrackers” before the president’s assumption of office while an estimated 20,000 square miles of the nation’s territory were occupied by insurgents.

The minister added: ‘They tout the downturn in economic fortunes without putting things in context.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing a global shutdown and a drastic fall in global oil demand, Nigeria lost 60 per cent of its earnings.

“Even with this downturn, the administration has ensured that not a single worker has been retrenched, has paid salaries as and when due and has continued to build infrastructure like roads, rails, bridges and power, among others, that will serve many generations.”

He accused them of aggravating ” the national fault lines with their angry and unguarded actions and rhetoric.”

According to the minister, the critics had forgotten that ” while national

fissures are amplified at a time of dwindling economic fortune, what is needed to foster peace and unity is not reckless elocution but responsible and responsive leadership, the kind being offered by President. ”

The minister reiterated that Nigeria is on the road to greatness inspite of the challenges confronting it.

He cited the hard push toward food sufficiency, the modernisation of the rail system, the nationwide construction of roads and bridges, the reform in the oil and gas sector and the unprecedented anti-corruption battle as achievements of the administration.

Mohammed also cited the diversification of the economy and the renewed effort to ensure a steady power supply anchored on a three-phase project that was expected to deliver 25,000MW of electricity in the next few years.

The minister thanked Nigerians for their perseverance and understanding, especially against the backdrop of the stifling effects

of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.

He appealed to them to continue to support the administration as it seeks to lift 100 million people out of poverty in the next 10 years.

”In one of the most difficult moments in the nation’s history, Nigeria is fortunate to have at the helm a leader who is not only dedicated, selfless and patriotic, but one who is globally acknowledged for his discipline, integrity and vision.

“Those who genuinely love Nigeria will support, rather than subvert, this committed leadership,” he said.

Presidency replies Obasanjo, says he is Nigeria’s Divider-in-Chief, who pretends to be a Messiah.

Following the comment by ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo, that Nigeria is becoming a failed state under President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency says the ex-president has become a lowly statesman.

Obasanjo, while delivering a speech titled, ‘Moving Nigeria Away from Tipping Over’ at a consultative dialogue on Thursday, September 10, 2020, said he had never seen Nigeria so divided.

But the presidency in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, described Obasanjo as a Divider-in-Chief, who pretends to be a Messiah.

Describing Obasanjo’s comment as an unfair attack on the President, the presidency highlighted Buhari’s efforts on nation building, constitutional amendments and infrastructural development.

In the statement, the Presidency asked Obasanjo to support the Federal Government in solving the problems of the nation rather than “helping the mushrooming of a poisonous atmosphere of ethnic and religious nationalism.

Read the statement below.

In his most recent statement former President Olusegun Obasanjo attempts to divide the nation while President Muhammadu Buhari continues to promote nation building and the unity of Nigeria.

The difference is clear. From the lofty heights of Commander-in-Chief, General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of Divider-in-Chief (to adapt the coinage of Time).

Before responding further to the unfair attacks on President Buhari and his administration by the former President, it is important that we categorically state that contrary to the assertions by a few analysts, the recent speech in which President Buhari advised West African Presidents against tenure elongation beyond constitutional limits has been consistent with his long held views on the need to adhere to the rule of law.

Even though he tried it and failed, the recent uptick in the number of such leaders proposing to do, or actually carrying on in office beyond term limits is sufficient to cause concern among democrats in the sub-region given its prospects of destabilizing the states and the region.

President Buhari’s advocacy is consistent with his principles and in line with the current policies of his administration and indeed that of the ECOWAS Charter which is that term limits must be respected and that the change of government is only permissible through the ballot box.

Having cleared this misperception, we hope that Chief Obasanjo would once again sheath the sword and rest the pretentiousness about the Messiah that has (mis)led him to pronounce often wrongly, as he disastrously did in the 2019 elections, about the life and death of Nigerian governments.

As some commentators are already suggesting, Chief Obasanjo should, in accordance with his mantra as a statesman, get involved with problems solving, when and where they exist instead of helping the mushrooming of a poisonous atmosphere of ethnic and religious nationalism.

Surely, he must have disappointed many of his local and foreign admirers by showering commendations on a few extremist groups who have vowed to shun the invitation to the National Assembly to participate in the process of constitutional amendment.

No doubt, he must have left those admirers confused in announcing the support for the boycott of a democratic process of changing the constitution, at the same time calling for dialogue and engagement.

The fact that the process he ushered in under his administration with the dubious intention of amendments that sought tenure elongation failed-as did two other attempts by the successor administrations of the same political party- does not in any way justify his dismissal of the exercise by the 9th Assembly as a another waste of time and resources.

To the credit of the All Progressives Congress-led 8th Assembly, the process of constitutional amendment was kickstarted and carried through, paving the way for, among other benefits, the financial independence of local government councils, States Houses of Assembly and the country’s Judiciary. These changes have already been signed into laws by the President as mandated by the constitution.

The recent decisions by the administration as they relate to subsidy withdrawal, helping to plug some of the most horrendous notorious holes and release of scarce resources for the more pressing needs of the people has also not escaped the ire of the former president.

It’s a known fact that the withdrawal of subsidies had been on the wish list of the Obasanjo-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. They failed in achieving these measures because, one there was a shared greed. They plundered the treasury as much as anyone could in the name of either subsidy or waiver with reckless impunity.

Two, is to say it takes courage and rare statesmanship on the part of a leader to do as President Buhari to shun populism and seek the best interest of the people and the state, providing the kind of reform and development that Nigeria urgently needs.

This President has run an administration focused on infrastructure and development. He has repaired our damaged relations with neighbours and our traditional allies such as the UK, US, China, Russia, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the others with lots of benefits to the country.

It is a pro-business administration that has used diplomacy to unlock bilateral trade and investment.

He leads a government that has liberalized the investment climate and market access by achieving reforms that have placed the country in the list of the world’s top reforming economies.

Nigeria, which other nations had mocked and ridiculed for so many things that were wrong is today progressing at a pace reflecting its size and potential.

With so much to show and many more coming, it is little surprise that President Buhari would be the object of envy and harsh unfair challenges by politicians who failed to deliver, but continue to nurse ambitions of delighting the audience long after their curtain has been drawn.

The Blood That Runs In My Veins Is Same That Runs In Every Nigerian- Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress, APC, National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Saturday, said that the blood that runs through his veins is the same blood that runs in every Nigerian veins.

Tinubu who paid a condolence visit to Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC- Sokoto) on the demise of his daughter, Sadiya Aliyu, called for unity, noting that the country could achieve nothing without unity.

Recall that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had said that Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and divided country, noting that mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development is one of the major reasons behind the country’s ordeal.

His words: “Today, Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state, economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country.

“And these manifestations are the products of recent mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development of our country.

“Old fault lines that were disappearing have opened up in greater fissures and with drums of hatred, disintegration and separation and accompanying choruses being heard loud and clear almost everywhere.

“It would appear that anybody not dancing to the drum beat nor joining in chorus singing would be earmarked as ethnically unpatriotic or enemy of its tribe or geographical area. In short, the country is fast moving to the precipice.
But happily, I observed that the five socio-cultural political groups gathered here have been getting together to find common ground, areas of agreement or accord for moving Nigeria away from tipping over.

“Before continuing, let me say that we must remind those who are beating the drums of disintegration and singing choruses of bitterness, anger and separation that if even Nigeria is broken up, the separated parts will still be neighbours. And they will have to find accommodation as neighbours or they will be ever at war. And those who prevent justice to be done invite violence to reign.”

Harping on unity, former Lagos state governor opined: “We have to unite to develop our country. The blood that runs in my veins is the same blood that runs in every Nigerian veins.

“Whether I am Yoruba and you are Fulani, Hausa or Igbo, the essence of our life is that we are Nigerians.

“Therefore, we should always dwell and take Nigeria first in everything we do for the good of our country,” he said.

New visa regime: Immigration assures travelers of fair treatment

The Service Spokesman, NIS, Mr Sunday James, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja, also promised to respect the fundamental rights of every traveler to the country.

James said that the service would continue to practice citizens’ diplomacy with the new visa regime.

As a committed service, we will continue to practice citizens’ diplomacy both towards Nigerians and foreigners regardless of passport but on merit and integrity.

“The quality of a national passport is not only in good finishing and look, but what determines its acceptance to the global communities is more on the integrity of the citizens which rubs on the integrity of the passport they are holding.

“Acceptance evaluation of Nigerian passport as a travel document and citizens integrity determines how many countries will allow a Nigerian citizen entry into their country under which condition and for how long,’’ he said.

James said that the NIS had uploaded 150,000 Stolen and Lost Travel Documents (SLTD) to the database of the International Police Global System (IPSG) as effort to checkmate visa crimes.

He said that in light of this, Nigeria had been rated the 1st country in Africa and 54th in the world to automate its uploading system.

“To have uploaded such quantity is an indication that the NIS is not resting on its oars and the information 24/7 centre of the service is working around the clock accessing diffusions from the INTERPOL General Assembly.

“This is to analyse, interrogate and interpret for domestic consumption and international actions to be taken.

“The result of such analysis, interrogation and interpretation is the upload of the 150,000 Stolen and Lost Travel Documents which by implication puts Nigeria on ascension on global podium of integrity, secured economy and safe for investment.

“This is also an indication that the NIS system is working to detect, identify and classify the various passports that were invalidated, stolen, lost, fake and tampered with,’’ he said.

James said that the fight against identity theft was part of the reason for the change from the colonial passport, hand written, Machine Readable Passport (MRP) to the e-passport.

He said that the enhanced e-passport has over 25 security features among other factors.

According to him, this is to guarantee the safety of the holder and document in line with

NAN reports that President Muhammadu Buhari on Feb. 4, officially presented the National Visa Policy 2020 (NVP) to the public at the State House, Villa.

The new visa regime aimed at creating new visa categories for Ease of Doing Business.

The NVP 2020 expands the classes of visa from six to 79, to accommodate additional travel requirements for expatriates intending to travel to Nigeria.

The NVP 2020 classifies travelers to Nigeria into two broad categories: Visa Free / Exemption and Visa Mandatory.

The new classes are categorized into Short Visit Visas(28 classes), these allow foreigners to visit Nigeria for a period of up to three months, for the purpose of tourism and short business meetings, amongst others.

Other are Temporary Residence Visas(36 classes), these allow individuals to reside in Nigeria for the purposes of employment, accompanying employed migrants and schooling, amongst others.

Another is the Permanent residence Visas (15 classes): these confer permanent residence status on spouses of Nigerian citizens, Nigerians by birth who have renounced their Nigerian citizenship, and their spouses, investors who import an annual minimum threshold of capital, highly skilled individuals and some classes of retirees.

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers abducted no fewer than 10 people in the early hours of Thursday at Tungan-Maje, a community between Zuba and Giri, on the Kaduna-Abuja-Lokoja highway.

A source in the area, who spoke to City News on Thursday afternoon, disclosed that the attackers, numbering about 20, got to the area on foot around 1 am and went into some houses opposite the Government Secondary School in the area where they abducted their victims.

A security source, who spoke to our reporter, said the kidnappers fled into nearby Shenagu forest, where they are suspected to have their camp, around 4 am along with their victims.

Also, the councillor representing Tungan-Maje ward in the area, Salihu Adamu, confirmed the incident, saying he was terrified by the sporadic gunshots fired by the kidnappers.

He said five among the kidnapped victims were rescued through the combined efforts of the police and vigilante members in the area and appealed to the police to intensify efforts in ensuring that the remaining five victims were also rescued.

Zuba Divisional Police Officer CSP Yahuza Muhammad said five of the victims, comprising three children, a pregnant woman and an elderly man were rescued unharmed.

He said the gunmen who were moving by foot, fled into the forest on noticing that security men were trailing them.

Tungan-Maje, situated between Zuba and Giri, is host to military facilities, one of which was recently named as Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment.

The incident came less than a week after some forests in the FCT were discovered to be used by terrorist groups’ hideout.

The spokesman of the FCT police command, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, also confirmed that five of those kidnapped had been rescued.

He said the police responded to a distress call at about 1:30 am and a joint team of police operatives from the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Rapid Response Squad and Zuba police division acted promptly to rescue the five people.

He said a fierce gun battle ensued with the heavily armed hoodlums before the police team succeeded in rescuing five of those kidnapped.

He said effort was on to rescue the remaining five victims.

“The command is still reassuring members of the public on its commitment to deploying proactive crime-fighting measures to ensure the security of lives and property in the FCT,” he said.

Nnamdi Kanu Reply Orji Uzor Kalu, Warn Him On Biafra Agitation, Reveals When He Will Return To Nigeria

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)Nnamdi Kanu, has warned the former governor of Abia state and the Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu on his recent statement about Biafra agitation.

The Senate Chief Whip pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to allow him to convince the IPOB leader to stop his agitation for the Republic of Biafra.

In a statement released in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Tuesday, the former governor had said Kanu will listen to him. He stated this in reaction to the recent altercation between members of IPOB and security personnel in Enugu state.

Senator Kalu had said he is a believer in one Nigeria and believes that people of the country are so entangled with each other that no one should be talking about separation. He added that what the country needs is to focus on taking advantage of the country’s population to build a stronger economy.

If the Federal Government permits me, I will go to the United Kingdom and negotiate with Nnamdi Kanu to return to Nigeria. I will convince him to drop the agitation for Biafra because our people don’t need it,” Kalu had said.

However, reacting to the claims by Kalu during a live broadcast on Radio Biafra monitored by this reporter on Wednesday evening, Kanu warned that anybody coming to him with the intention of convincing him to drop the idea of Biafra, he can assure them that what happened to Ike Ekweremadu, a former Senate President who was attacked in Germany last year by IPOB members, “will be a child’s play to such individual.”

Kanu warned that he has not mandated anybody to speak on his behalf to meet with Nigeria government nor representative to negotiate to stop Biafra agitation, adding that he will only meet Nigeria government to show him boundaries of “Biafra land  and sign the necessary documents”

The IPOB leader said: “Anybody coming to me with intention of convincing me to drop the idea of Biafra, I can assure you what happened to Ike Ekweremadu will be a child’s play to such an individual. This is the era of saboteurs and we must be very careful.

“I have not mandated anybody to speak on my behalf or myself to meet with Nigeria government nor representative to negotiate to stop Biafra agitation. I will only meet Nigeria government to show me boundaries of Biafra land and sign the necessary documents.”

Gov Ifranyi Okowa: ‘Sea piracy has reduced in Delta State’

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has pledged his government’s continued partnership with the military and other security agencies to ensure peace and order in the state.

Okowa made the pledge on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 when Maj.-Gen. Olubunmi Irefin, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port-Harcourt, visited him at Government House, Asaba.

He charged the army to sustain the current peace and security in the Niger Delta, adding that the Delta government has enjoyed a robust relationship with security agencies.

According to Okowa, the partnership between the state and security agencies has helped to ensure peace and security of lives and property and has also made Delta an investors’ destination.

“We are happy that sea piracy has reduced in Delta and we pledge the support of the South-South states to ensure protection of oil installations in the region.

“I assure you of our cooperation at all times because we have had very warm working relations with the division since inception.

“The military and other security agencies have worked quite a lot with us to ensure peace within the state. There is still a lot to be done but we have done quite a lot,” he said.

The governor commended the army formations for cooperating with other security agencies to ensure peace in the Niger Delta.

“I appreciate your division, the brigade and other military formations for all your efforts in ensuring peace and security in the entire Niger Delta.

“Sea piracy is still there, but it has largely reduced in Delta and we will continue to work hard and provide the needed support because when there is a perfect working relationship, to support becomes easier.

“Information sharing is necessary to secure our state, and here in Delta, community conflicts are stepped into as quickly as possible because of the various peace mechanisms we have put in place.

“We have had a very good working relationship and we hope to continue in that direction,” he said.

The GOC said that he was in Delta to familiarise himself with the government and people of the state.

He also commended the governor for the tremendous support he has given to 63 Brigade as well as the level of peace and security in the state.

Federal Government instruct hospitals to replace striking doctors with corps members

The federal government has directed the Chief Medical Directors and Managing Directors of federal tertiary hospitals in the country to start using consultants and doctors on the National Youth Service Corps to provide routine services.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire gave the directive on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, in a statement issued in Abuja.

The statement was issued following the nationwide strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors over the non-payment of their COVID-19 hazard allowance and other demands.

The government had on Tuesday urged the doctors to suspend the industrial action, saying six out of their eight demands have been addressed.

However, in the statement on Wednesday, the federal government said embarking on a strike at a time the nation is ill-advised.

Owing to the industrial action, the government said it’s ‘necessary to ensure measures are put in place to mitigate the effect of this strike on the generality of our populace.’

The statement reads, “lt is with deep concern that l view the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors which commenced yesterday (Tuesday) September 7, 2020.

“We must remember that the primary duty of doctors and all health workers is to save lives. Embarking on a strike in this time that the country is battling with the COVlD-19 pandemic is ill-timed and ill-advised.

“lt is a critical time in which all well-meaning medical professionals should close ranks and confront the common enemy, which is the COVlD-I9 pandemic threatening mankind.

“This is therefore one strike too many. Besides, most of the demands have been met and others, though, difficult, are at an advanced stage of implementation. A little patience would have made a big difference.

“The Federal Ministry of Health finds it necessary to ensure measures are put in place to mitigate the effect of this strike on the generality of our populace by directing the CMDs/MDs of our federal tertiary hospitals to immediately do the following: COVlD-19 treatment outlets should continue to function as before.

“Emergency services should continue to run as before. Routine services should be maintained with Consultants, NYSC Doctors. Locum staffers to be brought in when and where necessary to forestall services disruption when applicable and affordable.

“I call on the NARD to return to work and engage the Federal Government in completing the ongoing due process of implementing the MoU between NARD and government.

“I wish to assure the general public that measures have been put in place to ensure that they continue to access services at all our federal tertiary hospitals across the country”.

You’ll recall that in August, medical doctors battling the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja, threatened to embark on a strike to press home their demands from Tuesday, September 1, 2020.

The doctors said they haven’t been paid their allowances since June 2020.

“If the Federal Government permits me, I will go to the United Kingdom and negotiate with Nnamdi Kanu to return to Nigeria.”

“I will convince him to drop the agitation for Biafra because our people don’t need it,” Kalu said.

The Senate Chief Whip maintained that he is a believer in ‘One Nigeria’, adding that people of Nigeria are entangled with each other. He stated that Nigerians need to focus on is taking advantage of the country’s population to build a stronger economy.

You Don’t Need To Run Abroad – Bishop David Oyedepo Condemns Mindset To Flee Nigeria

Bishop David Oyedepo has said there is nothing abroad that isn’t in Nigeria but most Africans want to flee their country.

He kicked against the search for greener pastures abroad by most Africans as he says there’s nothing there that isn’t where they are.
According to him, there’s no need for one to run away abroad before making it in life as there’s nothing anywhere else that isn’t at where you are now.

Adding that no one is created to be a beggar therefore there’s no need going else where to beg before making it in life like others.
Netizens reacted to his comment sarcastically as they don’t seem to get where he’s coming from hilariously asking what exactly is at where they are now which is Nigeria.

Resident doctors have no reason to strike – minister

Breaking News | Ngige says resident doctors have no reason to strike

The Federal Government, appealed to the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, to suspend its ongoing industrial action, as the government has already addressed six out of the eight demands listed by the Association.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, stated this in his office in Abuja.

Senator Ngige asked NARD to respect the country’s laws and suspend its industrial action, reminding it that “by Labour Laws and ILO Conventions, when issues are being conciliated, all parties are enjoined not to employ arm-twisting methods to intimidate or foist a state of helplessness on the other party; in this case, your employers, the Federal Ministry of Health.”

In a statement signed by Charles Akpan, Deputy Director/Head, Press and Public Relations, the Minister said with such a high percentage of the Association’s demands already addressed, coupled with the existence of a pending case in the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, NICN, instituted by two Civil Society groups against NARD, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Ministers of Health, and Labour and Employment, NARD had no reason to embark on industrial action.

He stated that the groups, Citizens Advocacy for Social Rights (CASER) and Association of Women in Trading and Agriculture (AWITA), had asked for an interlocutory injunction against further strike actions by NARD, adding that all parties had already appeared and exchanged court processes.

The Minister noted that in spite of lean resources occasioned by the effect of COVID-19 on oil output, the Federal Government has already spent N20 billion on the Special Hazard and Inducement Allowances for Medical and Health Workers for April, May and June 2020, with a few outstanding payments to some health workers for June 2020.

Ngige also stated that the Federal Government has expended N9.3billion as premium for Group Life Insurance for Medical and Health workers, as well as for all Civil and Public servants in Federal organisations that are Treasury funded, to run from March 2020 to March 2021.

The Minister also disclosed that the Federal Government appropriated the sum of N4 billion in the Special Intervention COVID-19 N500 billion 2020 Appropriation for funding of Medical Residency Training and intended to do same in the ongoing 2021 Budget. He further stated that N4 billion has been processed for payment.

Ngige pointed out that the matter between NARD and the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has been resolved, while the resolution of the issue of State Governments not addressing the consequential adjustment to the new minimum wage, and low patronage of Residency programme were ongoing.

The Minister has therefore reconvened the ongoing conciliation meeting between NARD and Federal Ministries of Health, and Finance, Budget and National Planning to be held on Wednesday at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Hopefully Nigeria Will Get Justice At London Court

We welcome the ruling by a London Court to grant Nigeria reprieve to appeal the $9bn judgement debt that the country allegedly owes Process and Industrial Development, P&ID. The ruling would offer Nigeria an opportunity to state its own side on the matter.

We believe that Nigeria will win the case and save the country billions of dollars and commend the EFCC and the Nigerian team led by the Hon. Attorney General who had gone to court to establish that the contract was awarded on illegal terms.

This latest ruling by Judge Ross Cranston in a London Court noted that, “Nigeria had established a strong prima facie case that the GSPA was procured by bribes paid to insiders as part of a larger scheme to defraud Nigeria.”

Recall that on 31st January,  2017 a court in London had ruled that Nigeria should pay P&ID  $6.6bn as damages including a pre and post judgement interest at seven percent. The outstanding is estimated to be in the region of $10bn.

Nigeria To Test Vaccine Approved By Russia President

Nigeria expresses interest in Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine

The ministry in a tweet says “It is exploring all knowledge in terms of therapeutics & vaccines”.

Osagie says the reason for it’s expression of interest for the COVID-19 vaccine will afford the ministry the opportunity to work elaborately.

The Russian government had earlier announced in August that it has produced a vaccine to cure the novel COVID-19 vaccine adding that it will begin mass vaccinations against the virus in October.

Russian scientists has said early-stage trials of the vaccine has been completed and the results have been successful.

The vaccine uses adapted strains of the adenovirus, a virus that usually causes common cold, to trigger immune response.

The vaccine has however been approved before the phase-three trial.

Experts consider the phase-three trial as an important part of the testing process.

Upon this, the Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, on Tuesday said the vaccine has “proven to be highly effective and safe”.

Murashko lauded the discovery of the vaccine noting that it is a big step towards “humankind victory” over Covid-19.

The Russian vaccine is not among the World Health Organization (WHO) list of six vaccines that has gotten to phase three clinical trials, involving a widespread testing in humans.

FRSC Penalises 28 Officials For Duty Offences

The board of the Federal Road Safety Corps has issued punishment for 28 officers for a range of offences.

Their offences include desertion, forgery, number plate and drivers licence racketeering, bribery, scandalous behaviour, patrol misconduct, amongst others.

Among the punishment, eight officials are to be dismissed, 10 will have their appointments terminated, five will lose a rank and five will lose seniority.

Board chairman Bukhari Bello said the disciplinary actions are to serve as deterrent to others who may form the habit of contravening established regulations and tarnishing the good image of the Corps.
