How 2 of my children died because of my acting career – Alapinni

Veteran Yoruba actor Ganiyu Nofiu, popularly known as Alapinni and renowned for the perfect interpretation of herbalist’s role in the movies has opened up on some of the crisis he experienced during his acting career.

In this interview on Ojopagogo TV, Alapini said thus:

It was pleasant because of the passion that led me into the profession. I did not mind the crisis in the journey, but rather such a crisis made the journey more interesting.

There were so many challenges.. Em.. the challenges I encountered were ailments. That time, I remember I went to a town (name withheld) to felicitate with some traditional worshippers. From there, I got hallucinated and went on a sickbed for a whole year, before I was rescued by the Almighty God.“The tougher one I could mention was when I was preparing to celebrate my little child’s Walimat.

My first child was brought home from school terribly sick.  We tried all we could. On the Waliomat day of my little child, the child who was sick died that same day.“The loss pained me to the marrow, but I accepted my fate. After that incident, other challenges were the days of plenty and the days of having nothing to eat at all. Days I was supposed to perform my responsibilities to my parents but could not do anything. Those were the challenges I encountered that period.“

When were you mostly grieved?

On the day I was embarking on a journey to where I was charmed, my child who used to play with me, cuddled me, and I observed that he was crying. I tried to pacify him as he was only 4 years old. I later proceeded on the journey. When I returned, I did not see him alive anymore. When I was on a sickbed, I was looking at his picture, not knowing that he had died a day before I arrived home. By the time people broke the sad news to me the next morning, I felt so bitter, because I loved him so much.“

The second one was when I was preparing for my child’s wolimat, that my first son was brought in very sick and eventually died. It’s so sad losing a grown-up child.“But God is unquestionable. I became happy immediately because God gave me the grace to hold the child’s Wolimat before that my child’s life was taken by God in the evening. So, I thank God for the grace given me to have something to be grateful for.“The day I lost that child was my saddest day.

Nigeria To Test Vaccine Approved By Russia President

Nigeria expresses interest in Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine

The ministry in a tweet says “It is exploring all knowledge in terms of therapeutics & vaccines”.

Osagie says the reason for it’s expression of interest for the COVID-19 vaccine will afford the ministry the opportunity to work elaborately.

The Russian government had earlier announced in August that it has produced a vaccine to cure the novel COVID-19 vaccine adding that it will begin mass vaccinations against the virus in October.

Russian scientists has said early-stage trials of the vaccine has been completed and the results have been successful.

The vaccine uses adapted strains of the adenovirus, a virus that usually causes common cold, to trigger immune response.

The vaccine has however been approved before the phase-three trial.

Experts consider the phase-three trial as an important part of the testing process.

Upon this, the Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, on Tuesday said the vaccine has “proven to be highly effective and safe”.

Murashko lauded the discovery of the vaccine noting that it is a big step towards “humankind victory” over Covid-19.

The Russian vaccine is not among the World Health Organization (WHO) list of six vaccines that has gotten to phase three clinical trials, involving a widespread testing in humans.

Petrol May Cost More In South-East Unless FG Fixes Enugu Depot — IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Enugu depot, has warned that petrol may cost more in the South-East, should the Federal Government fail to reactivate the Emene depot.

The Chairman of Enugu depot of the association, Chinedu Anyaso, said that the depot had been lying moribund since 2005.

Anyaso He was reacting to the increase in the pump price of petrol and challenges faced by marketers in the zone.

He said the depot was strategic to the national economy, adding that it was serving Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, parts of Imo, Abia, Cross River and North-Central, including Benue State.

The IPMAN chief described the cost of transporting products from Lagos, Warri, Benin, Calabar and other locations as huge.

According to him, marketers do not get their equalisation fund as and when due.
He said that marketers in the zone were incurring huge losses due to incessant road crashes and spill involving their trucks as a result of poor state of the roads.

“We want to use this opportunity to renew our appeal to the federal government to repair the Emene depot in Enugu so that our members can start loading products from here.

“This depot has been shutdown for over 15 years due to what they called pipeline vandalism.
“Our members are suffering and the people of the southeast and other areas that source products from the depot are suffering.

“For instance, ex-depot price has been increased to N151.56, we will have to pay additional N14 for transportation and other expenses per litre depending on where we loaded before it is discharged in our stations.

“That will not be the case, if the product is pumped to the depot in Enugu and lifted from there, it will be much cheaper for us and enable us to sell between N160 and N162 per litre.

“We are ready to work with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on security of pipelines.

“And fixing the Enugu Depot will also help a better deregulated sector, which the federal government is pursing,” Anyaso said.

Anyaso said that petrol might be sold for N170 in the southeast because of cost of delivering the products at the stations in the zone.

He called on members of the association in the zone to continue to provide quality services to the people to the best of their ability.

He further called on the governments of the states that depend on the depot to complement IPMAN’s efforts to get the facility running again as soon as possible.

According to him, it is not just about profit for IPMAN members, it is about value for money for the people in these states. (NAN)

Afcon Trophy Goes Missing In Egypt Fire

The Africa Cup of Nations trophy Egypt won three times in a row is missing, Eqyptian football association confirms.

A former member of the federation Magdi Abdelghani said the cup was destroyed in a fire at the association’s Cairo HQ in 2013.

Ex-Egyptian Football Association vice-president Ahmed Shobeir earlier revealed that the trophy was discovered missing during preparations to build a museum to house all of the silverware won by the North African nation.

Former Fifa Board Member and Pharaohs great Abdelghani later confirmed that the cup was one of several items of silverware that had been lost in a fire seven years ago.

“Officials of the committee which meets every five years and currently manages the Football Association were surprised that the trophy was not available, in light of their desire to create a museum at the federation headquarters, which would feature the trophy and the national team’s kits,” Shobeir said on the ‘On Time Sports’ TV show.

“However, [they] were surprised to find that the Afcon trophy was lost, and decided to open an investigation.”

It was initially claimed that former captain Ahmed Hassan – who skippered the team to success at the biennial tournament in 2006, 2008 and 2010 – was in possession of the trophy, although he subsequently denied the claim.

“The committee searched for the trophy, but then an employee told them that Ahmed Hassan, the former captain of the Egyptian national team, who won the cup three times in a row, has kept it,” Shobeir added.

Later, ex-Egypt midfielder Abdelghani clarified in a press conference that the trophy had been lost in a fire seven years ago.

“After the burning of the Football Association headquarters, some cups were lost, and the matter was investigated,” the former FA member began, “including the Africa Cup of Nations that we retained.

“Some said that the cup had been with Shawky Gharib, the former general coach of the Egypt national team, and some say it had been with Hassan, the former captain of the Pharaohs.”

After learning of the trophy’s disappearance, Hassan took to social media to express his dismay at the loss.

“I wish I had kept the cup in my house instead of it being lost,” he posted on his @AhmedHassan Twitter handle, “and I am surprised that I’m being questioned about the cup after nine years, despite the presence of two FA boards, and the five-year committee for a year and two months…but they’re only now looking for the cup!

Ghana Mulls Review Of $1m Capital Base For Nigerian Traders After Meeting With Gbajabiamila

  • Ghana mulls review of $1m capital base for Nigerian traders after meeting Gbajabiamila

The President of Ghana, Prof. Nana Akufo-Addo, has expressed the government’s readiness to reconsider the one million dollars capital base for Nigerian and other foreign traders in the country.

The Investment Law is enshrined in the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Act 2013.

Akufo-Addo gave the assurance in a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabimila, on Friday in Jubilee House in Ghana.

In a statement by the Spokesman for the house, Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia), at the end of ‘Legislative Diplomacy Bilateral’ meeting between Nigeria and Ghana, Akufo-Addo pledged to implement the resolutions reached.

The legislative diplomacy dialogue became imperative as the parliaments of the two countries sought modalities to resolve challenges and provide an enabling business environment for foreign traders, including Nigerians, doing business in Ghana.

It could be recalled that several foreign businesses, including many Nigerian businesses, in Ghana have been facing challenges with regard to the implementation of the GIPC law.

The statement quoted Akufo-Addo as saying that Gbajabiamila’s request for a review of the GIPC Act was in order “as it makes a lot of sense”.
He endorsed Gbajabimila’s proposal for the operation of a ‘Nigeria-Ghana Business Council’ established by law in both countries.

The president suggested the setting up of a joint ministerial committee between both countries to spearhead issues between Ghana and Nigeria.
He told Gbajabiamila that he would also raise the issue with President Muhammadu Buhari when they meet at the ECOWAS Summit on Monday.
“I think the way forward, which is really what matters in situations like this, is what is being suggested, one that I find very acceptable, the idea of legislation.

“A Nigeria-Ghana business council that will superintendent trade matters and investment matters between our two countries may be long overdue.

“The time has come for us to take these worthwhile steps.

“I suggested to Mr. President (Muhammadu Buhari) that it will be a good idea to set up a joint ministerial committee of ministers from both sides who will be responsible for shepherding Ghana and Nigeria issues, reporting to both presidents at any one time, and that is how they should be resolved.

“I am hoping when I see him (Buhari) on Monday for the ECOWAS summit, we can advance these discussions and come to a final conclusion,” Akufo-Addo was quoted as saying.

Earlier, Gbajabiamila, told the Ghanaian President that he led a Nigerian parliamentary delegation to Ghana to make efforts through parliamentary diplomacy to resolve the issues at stake.

According to him, the Nigerian parliamentary delegation has appealed to its Ghanaian counterpart for a possible review of the GIPC Act.

“We have proffered a few suggestions, one of which is the establishment of Ghana/Nigeria Business Council backed by legislation on both sides,” Gbajabiamila said.

Meanwhile, a communiqué was issued jointly at the end of the bilateral meeting between members of the two Parliaments led by their respective Speakers, Gbajabiamila and Prof. Mike Oquaye.

The lawmakers resolved that measures would be adopted to support law-abiding traders to properly regularise their business operations and also alleviate trade challenges occasioned by the alleged closure of the retail stores.
The resolutions were reached in view of the ravaging impact of COVID-19 pandemic on businesses and families in both countries.(NAN)

  • 2 arrested after woman missing for 2 weeks found dead in shallow grave

Two weeks after a woman in Asaba was reported missing by her family, she was uncovered dead and buried in a shallow grave in her compound.

The discovery of the mutilated and decomposing remains of 36-year-old Joy Obiageli in her GRA Asaba residence shocked the neighbourhood.

Police have arrested the security guard of the compound and another neighbour in connection with Obiageli’s death.

The guard, named as Sunday, was arrested while driving an Avalon identified as belonging to the deceased woman, and could give no satisfactory answer how it came into his possession.

Reported missing

Obiageli was reported missing by a relation on August 22.

Sunday Onekanse, Obiageli’s uncle, said he spoke with her two weeks before the incident to discuss plans for her forthcoming wedding.

” I called her about two weeks ago and she was talking about her wedding plans. After that I was unable to reach her. Then I alerted other members of our family to get to her house but all efforts were futile,” he said.

Obiageli’s security Sunday was arrested on August 26 in her Avalon on Summit Road after tips from concerned persons.

Investigation also revealed that the deceased had on several occasions reported her co-tenant, Nonso Ekene to the GRA Police Division, for threatening her life.

Police deputy commissioner of operations Faleye Olaleye said when police stopped Sunday for  a search, “he could not certify the owner of the car, so he was arrested and handed over to the DPO in GRA.”

“He was questioned but he did not give any coherent answer to how he came in possession of the car and was subsequently detained.

“Shortly after, the brother to the deceased walked in to the station to complain that his sister has been missing for the last ten days. He then recognized and confirmed the vehicle to be for his missing sister.

“Then he was informed that a gentleman was arrested in possession of the vehicle after which he was obliged to see the man whom he identified as the security man of her residence.

He revealed that the security man did not confess to the crime until the 3rd September, when he led a team of policemen investigators to the compound where the body of the deceased was discovered in a shallow grave.

He disclosed that the Police has also arrested the co-tenant, Nonso for further interrogation on how the deceased was murdered and buried in the residence.

The police chief however stated that the intent for the murder of the deceased by both men has not yet been established as investigation is still ongoing.

Okowa Swears In 3 Judges, Urges Speedy Dispensation Of Justice

PRESS RELEASE

Delta Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Friday swore in three new Customary Court of Appeal judges in the state, with a charge to the judiciary to ensure speedy dispensation of justice at all times.

The new judges are Dele Okafor, Grace Abanre and Jessica Gberevbie.

The governor congratulated the three judges, and said that their appointments were based on their personal integrity and years of experience and urged them to bring their experiences to bear in the discharge of their duties.

Okowa swears in 3 judges

He thanked the Chief Judge, Justice Marshall Umukoro and President, Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Stella Oghene, for their efforts at ensuring that justice was speedily dispensed in the state.

He said that with the appointment of the new judges, the Customary Court of Appeal in the state could now function more efficiently, noting that their number was few and sometimes difficult to constitute a quorum.

Okowa reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering the judiciary to ensure speedy dispensation of justice, adding that that arm of government would soon begin to operate in autonomous status as the legislative arm.

He said: “We have continued as a state to ensure that we partner the judiciary to ensure that there is speedy dispensation of justice.

“So I must appreciate those who kept the process going until the swearing-in of the new judges of the Customary Court of Appeal.

“There is no doubt that Deltans and Nigerians have continued to yearn for speedy dispensation of justice and I want to appeal to our newly sworn-in judges that they must ensure commitment to the dispensation of justice, equity and fairness in all that they do.

“I know that it’s a difficult job you have been called up to do, but you have been appointed based on your personal integrity and years of experience and I expect that, that will be brought to play in ensuring the speed dispensation of justice.

“There is no doubt that we are in very troubled times at the moment, but I am sure that you should be able to sit in your various courts in line with the COVID-19 preventive protocols that have been put in place by the NCDC and I hope that even in this difficult times that you will be able to attend to the cases that will appear before you.

“As judges, you do know that in all you do, you need to be firm, fair and resolute in the discharge of your duties and I am sure that as judges of the courts of Delta State, we will be proud of the judgements you give and that you give judgements without fear or favour.”

Responding on behalf of new judges, Justice Dele Okafor thanked God and those who made it possible for them to emerge as judges, and assured that they would carry out their duties without fear or favour.
