Three Burnt To Death In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident

An accident that happened along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the evening hour of Friday, September 4 reportedly claimed three lives.

It was reported that the horrible incident happened around Danco filling station, involving a pick-up van.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC in Ogun State, Ahmed Umar told newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital that the three victims were burnt to death in the horrible accident.

Mr Umar revealed that the crash happened at about 4:37 pm on Friday and was caused as a result of over speeding and loss of control by the pickup van driver. He noted that the pickup van which has no registration number was on top speed when it lost control, rammed into a truck coming towards its and immediately burst into flame.

Umar revealed further that five persons, all males were involved in the accident, with one person sustaining injuries while three other persons were burnt to death.

“One vehicle was involved; a pick-up van with no registration number on it,” Umar revealed.

He continued, ”The suspected cause of the lone crash is excessive speeding which led to the loss of control and the van hit a truck in his front and immediately went into flame,”

He, however, confirmed that the injured victim had been taken to Idera Hospital in Sagamu for medical attention while the corpses were deposited at the mortuary.

The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps said five persons died while one was injured on Thursday in an accident after Sagamu Interchange, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Ogun Public Relations Officer of TRACE, disclosed this in a statement made available in Ota, Ogun.

Akinbiyi said the multiple accident, which happened about 9.30 a.m., was caused by reckless driving and wrongful overtaking.

He said three vehicles comprising a Daf tanker with no registration number, a Benz truck marked FST 340 XW, and a Mazda space bus marked GGE 296 DC, were involved in the accident.

The TRACE official said five persons died while one sustained injuries in the accident.

“The corpses of victims have been deposited at Idera Hospital morgue, Sagamu, while the survivor is also receiving treatment in the same hospital,” he said.

Akinbiyi said that the three vehicles involved in the accident had been taken to Police MTD Area Command, Sagamu, Ogun.

He advised motorists to refrain from reckless driving and wrongful overtaking that could lead to unnecessary loss of lives.

Over 20 persons burnt to death in Delta tanker explosion

At least 20 persons were reportedly burnt to death when a tanker laden with petroleum product exploded around Koko Junction section of the Benin/Saepele Expressway in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident, according to sources, occurred around 11:00am on Wednesday.

Our Correspondent gathered that the tanker burst into flames after it fell into a ditch around Koko and Ologbo axis of the Benin/Sapele expressway in Ethiope West Local Government Area of the State.

Several vehicles on the road were trapped and burnt, a passenger who narrowly escaped the fire incident told newsmen.

It was gathered that the victims were burnt beyond recognition while no fewer than 10 vehicles were gutted by fire.

An eyewitness said she was headed to Sapele from Benin when the Nissan Quest car she drove with other passengers was locked down in the heavy gridlock the incident precipitated on the road.

“The tanker carrying petroleum product was trying to escape a bad spot when it fell and suddenly exploded between Koko Junction and Ologbo section of the Benin/Warri in Delta State.

“The explosion was very devastating, many people were trapped in several vehicles in the inferno.

“At least, 10 passenger vehicles were burnt and no fewer than 20 charred bodies were removed from the vehicles. We were lucky because we got there when fire fighters were already battling the fire.

“Many people were trapped inside the vehicles and it was difficult to rescue them because the fire was really huge,” she said.

As at 3:00pm, officials of Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) were still battling the fire and rescuCorpsvictims.
