Police in Lagos have arrested a four people in connection with a clash between members of Eiye and Aiye Confraternity

They were arrested in their houses at Oregun village by the policemen attached to Ikeja Police Division. One of the suspects, Ogunubi, said he was initiated into the Aiye cult group when he was 16. He said: “I was initiated into the Eiye cult group by my area brother, when I followed him to a birthday party in Sagamu.

That was where I was beaten and given a substance to drink and confirmed me as a member of the confraternity.” “After I joined them, it became difficult for me to leave, because I am afraid of being killed. What I usually do is to go on errands for the senior members in the group. It was after I had spent about two years that the leader of the group drew the picture of Eiye (a bird) on my chest to show that I am a bona fide member of Eiye Confraternity. “I was going on an errand at Ojota when I was stopped by some policemen. After I was searched, the police sawthe picture drawn on my chest.

I was immediately arrested by the police and taken to their station at Ikeja. After I was interrogated, I confessed to the police that I am a cultist.” Another suspect, Akeem, who has Awawa Boys’ tattoo on his face, denied participating in the rival cult war between Ojota and Olusosun boys. He said he was going on the street at Oregun, when policemen arrested him. He, however, said he had some friends who belonged to cult groups.

Lagos Couple Gives Birth To Quadruplets After 5 Years Of Marriage

The joy of Mr. Nonso Amyaegbu knew no bound when his wife, 41-year-old Mrs. Maureen, was delivered of quadruplet, five years after their marriage.

According to Amyaegbu, the babies, one boy and three girls, were given birth to on August 6, 2020 by a team of 20 medical personnel in a surgery that lasted about seven hours.

“My wife was taken into the theatre at about 7am and was there up-to about 1.30pm.

“While she was in the theatre, I was praying to God because I was very apprehensive.

“At a point, the fact that she was still in theatre overshadowed the joy of having the babies,” he said.

He said he had no idea the babies were four until after delivery, noting that all the scan results prior to delivery had shown triplet.

Commenting on her delivery, Dr. Job Adebayo of the Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Department, FMC, Ebute Meta, explained that 41-year-old Maureen was monitored through-out her pregnancy up to the delivery stage.

He made known that a caesarean section was planned for her delivery because of the number of babies involved.

“After I brought out the third baby, I was about to remove the placenta when I felt a kick on my hand and behold, it was the fourth baby in the amniotic sac.

“In fact, the last child was the heaviest of them all.

“The babies weighed 1.5kg, 1.56kg, 1.6kg, but the fourth baby weighed 1.9kg,” he said, noting that they were all doing fine.

Narrating how life was before God answered their prayer, 43-year-old Amyaegbu said, “I and my wife have had to wait for over five years.

“It was really not easy as we were both very worried, my wife was particularly worried but we kept encouraging each other.
“What I did was that I ensured no one pressurised my wife or blamed her for not being able to bear a child.

“Two years into the marriage, we started asking questions, we sought medical advice, we got checked and we were both certified okay.

“So, my wife was placed on some multi-vitamin to boost her chances, she kept taking them until God answered our prayers in a miraculous way.

“When God eventually answered our prayers, we hoped for only child but we were surprised when the scan result revealed triplets.”

The father of the quadruplet, who is a quantity surveyor and mortgage consultant, explained that results of the various scan carried out on his wife revealed triplet, even up to two days to her delivery.

“I was more surprised when the matron came out to congratulate me that my wife had been delivered of four babies.

“It was indeed a miracle because we have been praying to God for one or two, but he chose to shock us with four at a time,” he said.

He, however, said the babies were still in the nursery as his wife recuperates at the hospital.

While he encouraged expectant couples to be patient, prayerful and never neglect medical help, he also called on the state government and Nigerians with the where-withal to support him in catering for his quadruplet.

The new mother, Maureen, a public servant, thanked her husband for supporting and encouraging her during the waiting period.

Ignore Lagos Government’s Directive, Don’t Reopen' – Pastor Tunde Bakare Warns Churches

Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC) has advised churches to ignore the Lagos State Government’s directive to reopen on Sunday, August 9.

Bakare, during an online sermon on Sunday, queried the decision to reopen the worship centres when the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said that the COVID-19 pandemic would peak in Nigeria in August.

The cleric advised worshippers not to allow any religious leader or government official to lead them like sheep to the slaughter house.

He said, “I have to appeal to you once again, please keep safe and do your best to stay alive. Do not let anyone, whether religious leader or governmental leader, to drive you like a sheep to the slaughter.
“If they (the government and the disease control authorities) said that the month of August is going to be the peak of the infection, why should they ask people to rush in (re-open the churches) again?
“Please keep safe and do your best to keep alive by keeping all the necessary rules. We know that by the grace of God this pandemic like the others before it has an expiry date. It shall not see our end. We shall see its end in the mighty name of Jesus.”
Bakare said that the state government might have caved in to pressure from religious leaders to lift the ban it earlier placed on religious gatherings.

The pastor said that even though the government had the right to shut the churches, it does not have the right to force christians to re-open the worship centres.

Meanwhile, the General overseer of living faith ministries, Bishop David Oyedepo had threatened that ‘fire will fall’ if churches are shut down again in Nigeria.

Police arrest suspected robbery gang leader Terror in Lagos

Policemen attached to the Satellite Town police station, Lagos, have arrested a suspected leader of an armed robbery gang, Udenwa Ifeanyi, alias ‘Terror’, over sundry crimes in the area.

The police said the suspect and his gang had been on police wanted list for allegedly terrorising residents of Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin and Ijegun areas of Lagos State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed Ifeanyi’s arrest yesterday to our correspondent over the phone, said the arrest followed information to the police two weeks ago that robbers had been seen on Akinlomide Street, Ijegun, robbing shop owners of their valuables.

“Upon receipt of the information, operatives from the Satellite Town police station and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad raced to the scene, where they arrested the ring leader, Udenwa Ifeanyi.

“During interrogation, he confessed that his gang had been terrorising residents of Satellite Town and its environs.

“Items recovered from him included a cut-to-size gun and four live cartridges.

“Operatives are on the trail of his gang members,” he said.

Ifako mourns as bandits stab jogger to death at Fagba

Residents of Gospel Crusader, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos were thrown into mourning on Thursday, as a promising young man who went jogging during the early hours was attacked by daredevil bandits and stabbed to death at Fagba area.

Information made available to People & Politics revealed that Bayo Aiyeola, the last born of the family of eight children and second son of the Aiyeolas went out to jog within the Ifako axis.

The young man was reported to have stopped to use the automated machine, so as to get some cash around Fagba.

“While he left the ATM, I think these Fagba boys saw him and he was attacked in the process. Meanwhile, I guess he contended with them, so they stabbed him multiple times, dispossessed him of his cash and other things and left him in his pool of blood”, a neighbour told People & Politics.

Eyewitnesses allegedly reached out to Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, at Olowosekedile, Iju Road, but they didn’t show up, same as Red House Police Station, until about two hours after.

“When they showed up, it was too late, Bayo was already dead”, another neighbour said.

In a visit to the community, everyone described Bayo as a decent and easy going promising young man.

“He’s a very quiet personality. The most unfortunate thing is that he was the one taking care of his aged parents, and those people were thrown into mourning at this old age by some God-forsaken devil’s mercenaries hanging around Fagba and the rail line axis.

“The government needs to rid those idiots off that place. Not too long ago, a pregnant woman was also beheaded in that same area. A lot of atrocities have been perpetrated there”, a mourner lamented.

The mother was sedated at the time of the visit because of the unbearable shock.

Efforts to reach DSP Bala Elkana, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos by People & Politics, to comment on this incident were futile as calls made to him were not picked, neither was the message sent to him responded to, at the time of filing this news.

32-year-old man commits suicide in Lagos

A 32-year-old man identified as Aboh Ogbeche, on Friday, committed suicide at his family residence in Lawanson, Surulere area of Lagos State.

Aboh was said to have drank bleach, even as sources stated that there was nothing to indicate that he was planning to commit suicide.

It was gathered that the victim poured the liquid in a cup, sat before his mother, gulped the substance and immediately began to convulse.

A close friend of the deceased said the mother, who was shocked by the incident, raised the alarm and Aboh was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was gathered that the deceased did not leave behind a suicide note or told any of his friends about his plan to commit suicide.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Aboh was a very jovial person and nobody knew he could think of taking his own life.

“He was from Cross River State and about 32 years old. He slumped in the presence of his mum around 3.30pm on Friday after drinking a brand of bleach. He was rushed to the Aishat Hospital in Idi Araba, where he died. His body has been deposited in the LUTH mortuary.”

Aboh’s friends, who were shocked by the incident, shared their thoughts on the victim’s Facebook page.

One of his friends, AirsTee Martins, wrote, “Sweet heart, you should have spoken to someone. How could you have thought for a moment that this is the best way. Please, let one try to speak if he is going through a rough time.

“Even if we are far apart, we still connect one way or the other. So, please, no one should feel intimidated with what the other might have achieved. This social media; people develop low self-esteem, get depressed and feel like they are not enough.

“But it should not be so. Let’s try to stay strong because when there is life, there is hope. RIP Ogbeche.”

Another friend of the deceased, Gulf Limmer, wrote, “What happened to him? Why Aboh? We chatted three weeks ago. Why Ogbeche? Why did you take your life?”

A resident of Lawanson, who gave his name as Ndifreke, said that the deceased’s mother was devastated because her son took his life in her presence.

Ndifreke stated, “He did not leave any suicide note behind. I learnt that the mother saw her son with the substance, which he poured in a cup and drank. He told his mum that he had drunk it, but the mother thought he was joking.

“Aboh was a very playful person. So, not up to two minutes he drank the bleach, he began to convulse. As he was being rushed to hospital, he was given palm oil. But he did not survive it. Nobody was oppressing him and nobody was trying to blackmail him; we don’t know the reason why he took his life.

“The mother has been crying since then. She is in shock because the incident happened in her presence.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said he had not been briefed about the incident.

“I cannot confirm what is not reported to us. That incident is not known to us. Let me find out if it is reported,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu to empower one million youths with digital skills by 2023

The Lagos State Government led by Governor Babajide SanwoOlu, through the office of the Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has kicked off ‘Jobs Initiative Lagos’ – an initiative targeted at young people in eight Lagos-based tertiary institutions.

The initiative aims at providing complementary training of students in their ultimate and penultimate year in entrepreneurship, employability and basic digital skills required for the workplace.

The essence of the programme is to account for the documented gaps in current curriculum that bedevils the employment market and to increase labour employability of graduates in Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence.

Candidates who complete the programme will get an opportunity to be featured on a jobs portal from where partner corporate organisations can select fresh graduates for recruitment.

This initiative will run alongside a more robust digital skills campaign ‘Digital Skills Initiative Lagos’ (www.dsilagos.ng) aimed at empowering over one million young people in the state by 2023 with digital skills, which will invariably position Lagos as the Tech Hub of Africa.

Students in secondary schools in Lagos would have access to well-trained instructors while those out of school would access digital skills training and various internship opportunities as they complete the programmes.

The projects are being coordinated by LoftyInc Allied Partners Limited – an innovation development company that develops start-up teams, manages innovation programmes, and facilitates impact projects in West Africa

Lagos opens recruitment portal for doctors, health workers

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday opened its portal for the recruitments of over 700 doctors and other health workers.

It said that the exercise is in a bid to ensure adequate manpower in all its health facilities and the need to fill the vacant positions in the 27 General Hospitals across state necessitated the recruitment exercise for efficient and top-class healthcare delivery in all government health facilities.

The State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said that approval was given for the Health Service Commission to employ over 760 health workers of which 400 would be doctors in line with the government’s commitment towards addressing the shortage of health workers across the state.

He, however, disclosed that the exercise has been phased in batches to ensure compliance with coronavirus (COVID-19) safety measures and that the first batch of recruitment will be concluded soon after which the second batch will take off.

Confirming the approval, the State Health Service Commission said it announced the commencement of recruitment exercise for medical professionals into General Hospitals across the state.

The Commission, through a statement released to newsmen, said that interested applicants could proceed to its recruitment portal, and apply for vacant positions as listed on the portal.

“The decision to fill the vacant positions in the 27 General Hospitals across the state followed the approval granted by the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to increase the staff strength of medical personnel in the hospitals.

“Some of the vacant positions for employment opportunities include that of Medical Consultants, Medical and Dental Officers, Pharmacists, Nursing Officers, Pharmacy Technicians, Dental Therapists, and Dental Technicians

“The recruitment portal will only be accessible for three weeks from 12 noon on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, to 12 noon on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.

“Submission of forms in its office by applicants would not be entertained as part of measures to mitigate the spread of the deadly respiratory disease currently ravaging the world,” the statement read.

Noting that complication of the disease can be very difficult to manage, Sanwo-Olu said, doing the basics such as; early detection of the patient whether moderate or developing complications, early application of intervention to reduce mortality, coping with the interventions and other forms of care interventions in the ICU to reduce second re-complication in terms of care was very essential.

He stressed the need for international collaboration between medical associations during the pandemic.

“To show solidarity in the face of a common threat is something that we all strive for, we, unfortunately, exist in the world today with those values threatened and the values of solidarity, empathy are under threat and pressure,” he stated.

In his remarks, USAID’s Mission Director, Mr. Stephen M. Haykin explained that, “Power Africa recognises the importance of reliable electricity supply to Nigeria’s present and future. From energy perspective, I can’t think of a better way to accelerate access to electricity than to actively partner with the Lagos State Government for the development of a robust Integrated Resource Plan. To this end, it is vital that we support this initiative, as it serves as a critical planning process to meet consumers’ needs for electricity services in a way that satisfies multiple objectives for resource use.”

In support of the Integrated Resource Plan, PA-NPSP will provide an analysis and review of the power sector in Lagos State to develop a state-of-the-art planning mechanism that is best suited for the long-term electricity needs of the State’s residents, businesses, industries, and public/government premises such as hospitals and health clinics.

This roadmap will assist the Lagos State Government and the State’s energy stakeholders to predict power system requirements for the next 20 years, enabling the effective and efficient management of energy resources.

At the signing ceremony, the deputy chief of party for PA-NPSP, Mr. Tunde Gbajumo, emphasised the importance of collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.

He explained that PA-NPSP and the Lagos State Government will work closely with various stakeholders in the Lagos State power sector to develop the Integrated Resource Plan and have already formed a Study Team composed of gas suppliers, the two Lagos distribution companies, generation companies, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the Rural Electrification Agency and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Gbajumo further said that, “The Power Africa Nigeria Power Sector Program is excited to be part of this landmark event for the partnership between the Lagos State Government and USAID and hope that this event will serve as a further testament to the productive and sustainable growth of Nigeria’s energy sector.”

Other participants at the event included the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board as well as key representatives from Transmission Company of Nigeria, Rural Electrification Agency, Egbin Power PLC, Ikeja Electric PLC and Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

Eight-year-old girl leads anti-rape protest in Lagos

An eight-year-old girl, Gift Ezichi, has rallied women in Lagos to protest against incessant rape and violence against women across the country

The protest march took place at the weekend with Ezichi, a Basic Two pupil, leading the procession through Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos.

The Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation (APEF), a non-government organisation, organised the protest.

She said “I joined this campaign because I want to help stop rape at all cost. I am afraid for my life.”

The National Assembly has passed a Bill criminalising rape and sexual harassment, but the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) said it was designed to portray lecturers as potential sexual predators and criminals.

ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said in Jos, “We don’t want a situation, where male lecturers will say they won’t teach or supervise female students…”

ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS(LAGOS STATE) SAYS ANY MEMBER FOUND BEHIND COURT CASE AGAINST THE NATIONAL CARETAKER COMMITTEE WILL FACE SANCTIONS

A press release of  Lagos State chapter of All Progressive Congress signed by
Hon Tunde Balogun, Lagos State APC Chairman.
 It reads in parts
We have seen a report in a national newspaper that a purported APC member in Lagos State had instituted a case at a Federal High Court, against the party’s National Caretaker Committee.

We believe the person who instituted the suit is not a member of our party because it is highly doubtful that a bonafide member of the APC in Lagos in good standing would initiate such an action; we will, however, investigate the matter.

Here, I want to reiterate the stance of the APC in Lagos. No party member should file a court action regarding the recent National Executive Committee meeting of the party in Abuja particularly if that person has not even sought to initiate internal conflict resolution processes to resolve any dispute they may have with the NEC decisions.

Filing any such legal action is clearly against the spirit and letter of the party constitution, which prohibits legal action before a member exhausts all internal resolution mechanisms. Our resolve against institution of any court case by any member is in consonance with the constitution of the party.

Lagos APC will not turn a blind eye to the flouting of the constitution in this manner. We are trying to restore order and decorum to the party and thus no member should seek to sow confusion. Any party member involved in the institution of any such case should withdraw the case from court forthwith. Failure to do so will subject that party member to sanctions enumerated in the constitution, which may include suspension or expulsion.

No party can flourish when members engage in instituting frivolous court cases for the sole purpose of causing disunity and turmoil. This is an act of gross indiscipline which cannot be sustained and which we will not allow.
