Party Guest Stabs Celebrant To Death In Ogun State (Photo)

IgbereTV reports that a party celebrant identified as Omeika Josiah at Amini Awo village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun state was stabbed to death by his guest, identified as Sunday Philip.

The suspect, Sunday Philip said to be an apprentice mechanic, arrived the party uninvited and was served a bottle of beer and a plate of spiced spaghetti.

In the course of the party, Philip got into an argument with a guest which resulted to a fight. The celebrant walked in on both men fighting and took sides with the guest identified as Jonah, and this got Philip angry. The suspect ran into a nearby house and returned with a knife which he used to stab Philip.

“One of the guests named Jonah sent a boy to move the sound system away from the scene when he noticed that food and drinks were pouring on the floor. But Sunday (Philip), an apprentice mechanic, prevented the boy sent by Jonah from taking the jukebox away and seized the sound gadget. Jonah tried to take the sound system from Sunday and a fight broke out between them,” the source explained.

“When Sunday realised that he could not overpower Jonah, he rushed to a nearby house and brought out a knife to attack Jonah. Unfortunately, on his way back to Jonah, he met the celebrator, Josiah, who warned him not to disrupt his party. But Sunday then became angry that Josiah had taken sides with Jonah, so he stabbed him to death.”

A community leader who confirmed the incident said he was not aware of the plan to hold a birthday party in the village and had the deceased celebrator told him, he would have informed the village head, Chief Kunle Aromokun, to put in place adequate security.

“It is sad that the life of the celebrator was cut short by an uninvited guest at his own party. If the late Josiah had told me that he was going to organise a party to celebrate his birthday, I would have told the Baale (village head), who would have in turn invited members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) to provide security and prevent a breakdown of law and order at the event.” he said.

One of the guests at the party identified simply as Oladele said that the suspect lived on the same street as Josiah, but he was not invited to the party.

“Sunday (Philip) had left home for work very early in the morning. He had no idea that Josiah was going to throw a birthday party in the neighbourhood,” said Oladele.

“He however came to the party when he got wind that it was Josiah’s birthday celebration. Only God knows what came over him when he launched into a fight with another guest and close friend of the celebrator. If not for the timely intervention of the community leaders and other residents, he would have been mobbed to death when he was nabbed after he tried to escape from the scene where he stabbed Josiah to death.”

Adebayo, who teaches in a private school in the state, was arrested following a report by the proprietress of the school at Sango police station.

According to the police, the proprietress stated further that the teacher intimidated the victim by telling her that she will not pass the WAEC examinations if she failed to allow him have sex with her.

The Police said the randy teacher later had his way and always called the victim “out of the dormitory in the night and taking her to a classroom where he used to have carnal knowledge of her.”

“When the victim can no longer bear the sexual assault of the randy teacher, she decided to inform the proprietress,” the statement said.

Oyeyemi said following receipt of the report, the DPO Sango division, Csp Godwin Idehai, detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested.

He hinted that the suspect “has since then made a confessional statement admitting the commission of the crime.”

Oyeyemi said the victim had been taken to hospital for medical attention.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Edward A. Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti-human trafficking and child labor unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Ogun State: Police Kill Serial Killer, Spartan

Police in Ogun State yesterday shot dead a notorious suspected serial killer, Feyisola Dosumu, popularly known as “Spartan.”

The suspect was declared wanted by the oolice on Friday, July 31, for allegedly killing no fewer than seven people at Ogere and Iperu Remo, the hometown of Governor Dapo Abiodun, in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

But it took the efforts of the joint security team of police, local hunters and vigilantes in a two-day operation to bring down the suspect in his enclave at Ogere.

The operation was led by the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun. The bullet ridden body of the suspect was taken to the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.

About three months ago, Dosumu, an alleged notorious cultist and drug addict, hacked three people to death at Ogere and Iperu. Again, the suspect went on the rampage on Tuesday, July 28, and killex two people, one each at Ogere and Iperu Remo. Dosumu also hacked a nursing mother to death at Ogere before killing a security guard attached to one poultry farm at Iperu Remo.

Briefing the governor on how Dosumu was killed, the Police Commissioner, Ajogun, said the suspect usually sneaks out of his enclave in the forest into the community and hacks his victims to death. The oolice boss disclosed that the suspect started his killing spree in April and a N1 million bounty was placed on him.

Ajogun added that the suspect almost “slipped away” from the hands of his men. He said: “Before my assumption of office, he (suspect) had killed about four persons. His modules operandi is this, he lives in the bushes in the community, there from time to time, he sneaked out ‘matchetes’ his victims to death.

Then, he progressed in that manner to selective victims, ‘matchetes’ them to death, then dashed back to the bush. “We employed the reactive means of always combing the bush each time this thing happens.”

The commissioner disclosed that he was given a marching order by both Governor Abiodun and the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Adamu, for Dosumu’s arrest.

Ogun police raise the alarm over planned cult attacks

The Ogun State Police Command has raised the alarm over plans by cultists to unleash terror on the people in the state.

The police said the command got intelligence reports that some cult groups were planning to cause chaos during their annual celebration tagged ‘8/8’, being August 8, 2020, on Saturday, today.

The police, in a statement by its spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, hinted that the celebration might result in killings and destruction of property across the state.

The statement warned members of cult groups to desist from any form of violence in the state. The command further advised operators of hotels in the state not to allow any cult groups to use their facilities for any cult-related gathering.

It insisted that anybody arrested for any cult-related activity would face the full weight of the law.

“The command is therefore using this medium to appeal to parents and guardians to warn their wards to steer clear of any unlawful gathering or society on or before and after the said date to prevent had-I-known situation.’’

The command assured members of the public to go about their lawful business without fear of harassment, intimidation and molestation. It noted that it had rolled out all in its arsenal to deal decisively with anybody trying to breach the peace in the state.

ALL RETURNING SS3 BOARDING STUDENTS

OGUN MAKES COVID-19 TEST FREE FOR
The State has been very apprehensive about the issue of school opening even for exit students. Data from other countries, where schools have resumed show that community transmission in school environments is a major concern. Even countries with strongerhealth care facilities than ours are being very cautious.

In line with the Federal Ministry of Education recommendation and WASSCE timetable, we decided to open our schools on the 4thAugust 2020 for SS3 students only. We put in place guidelines that would ensure that our students resume in a safe environment.

In our pre-opening engagements with stakeholders, opening of boarding houses was discussed. Our State has one of the largest population of boarding students in the country, coming from all over the Country. After consultations with health professionals, we concluded that testing the children for COVID-19 before admittance will reduce the risk of community transmission. This is to reassure parents and even teachers of the safety of everybody concerned.

The State planned and provided testing, free of charge, for boarding students in our public schools and allowed for the management and parents of private schools to make their arrangements to get COVID tests. The two Ogun State run laboratories have a capacity for about 500 tests a day and conduct free tests for traced contacts or symptomatic patients. To meet the additional demand for the expected number of boarding students, the statement from the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology listed some private test centers which set up sampling points in some of our Health facilities.

These private laboratories have been accredited by NCDC and Lagos State Government for walk-in tests and charge N50,400 per test but I understand that the Ministries of Health and Education negotiated this to N25,000 for boarding students in private schools that may wish to use them. There is no financial benefit to the State Government.

After reviewing these developments, I have today immediately directed that the Government Laboratories carry out test for all returning SS3 boarding students at no cost. I have also directed that all those who have paid for tests be refunded.

The health of our children remains our utmost priority, however in view of the total number of boarding students to be tested (5,340private and 500 public), and bearing in mind the limitation of our installed testing capacity of 500 tests per day, it may not be feasible for all boarding students to get tested and get their results prior to resumption or even exams which commence on 17th August 2020.

Consequently the State Government has therefore stepped down the COVID-19 test as a mandatory requirement for returning students in our exit classes. We therefore enjoin Private School owners toexercise their duty of care to their pupils. The admittance of students into boarding house in private secondary schools will be at the discretion of the management and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of such private schools.

Ogun State Government recommends that students who do not have to stay in the boarding house should attend school from home, especially those with underlying health conditions.

I have also directed the provision of face masks to all students inboth private and public schools.

The inconvenience and confusion experienced yesterday is highly regrettable and my sincere apologies to the parents and students so affected.

The quality and standard of education and well being of our children are issues that are very dear to my heart.

I appreciate the cooperation, support, resilience and understanding of all the people of Ogun State towards flattening the curve of COVID-19 in Ogun State. It is my prayer that this phase will end soonest.

“Igbega Ipinle Ogun, ajose gbogbo wa ni o.”

Governor of Ogun State, Nigeria.

25,000 COVID 19 Test: Voice of Ogun Women joins Parents to say: NO.

The Voice of Ogun Women,  VOW, a Non Governmental Organisation of women of Ogun state origin either by birth or marriage is concerned over the current reported request by the Ogun State Government that Secondary School boarding students are to  pay for Covid tests before resumption.
The State Government in anticipation for the resumption of academic activities for students in exit classes nationwide starting from Monday, August 3,  had  in  a statement released on  August 1, by Mrs.Ronke Soyombo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary and Secondary, mandated all students in boarding houses to undergo Malaria and COVID-19 tests as condition for admission into their various boarding houses.
Much as we appreciate the untiring efforts of the State Government to stem the spread of the virus  and restore a near normal situation in the State, VOW, is of the the view that there should be parity in Government Policies as they affect children in both Private and Public Schools in the State.
Any policy that has the semblance of discrimination must not be promoted by the government.

We may ask why  parents whose source of income had been seriously affected in the last 6 months should be further burdened by government; Whereas some category of elite citizens who could afford to pay for the test and  treatment got tested and treated for free.?   Why should  the SS3 boarders, who are bonafide children  of the state,who are entitled to healthcare, now  pay for COVID 19 tests... This to us is an example of an  anti people policy by the present administration of Ogun State..

If we may further ask,...What would be Government's way of palliative to Children as beneficiaries of the various in flow of huge resources both financial and material.
Little wonder why the general populace is taking the matter of the pandemic with levity and unseriousness. .
The Ogun State Women as Mothers are in support of parents with children in SS3 on their stand not to pay 25k for Covid test ..We therefore join the parents to plead with Governor Dapo Abiodun to override this directive and allow ALL our children in the state be tested FREE OF CHARGE  as part of Government Public Health and Social Welfare  Responsibility Programme for Children of Ogun State ..This  will sum up  to government's effort in building  a heathy and vibrant future for our children.
The Voice of Ogun women argued that owners of schools as Small Scale Businesses should even be considered for tax holiday saying after all the schools pay Annual Renewal Fees to the State Government.
The Voice of Ogun  Women concluded by urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to quash this unpopular and ill thought out directive carried out by the Education Adviser and the Health Commissioner.

“It Is Unacceptable” Obasanjo Condemns N25,000 COVID-19 Test Fee On Parents

The former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has vehemently condemned the N25,000 Covid19 test levy imposed on private schools parents by the Ogun state government as part of criteria for safe reopening of schools in the state.

The erstwhile President made his position known in a letter made available to journalists.

He explained that such decision by the state Government is insensitive and inconsiderate, specially at this time where COVID-19 has affected so many homes financially and otherwise.

He called on Governor Abiodun to revisit his decision maintaining that it is unacceptable.

Gov. Abiodun Summons Education Adviser, Soyombo, Health Commissioner Over N25,000 Covid-19 Test Payment

Apparently disgruntled by the rave of public outcry against the outrageous amount slammed on Private Schools Students by the State Ministry of Education, the Ogun state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has summoned the Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo and the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker to his office this morning.

A top official in the ministry of education informed that the governor was angry over the ugly development which has further crippled the popularity of his administration.

She claimed the governor was unaware of the levy on private secondary school students for covid-19 test on the state.

The impeccable source who pleaded anonymity confided in our reporter that, the subsidized N25,000 for the covid-19 test by private primary and secondary schools students was solely the decision of the Special Adviser and some top Directors of the Ministry of Education.

The source further hinted that payment for treatment of Covid-19 can only be approved at the State Executive Council meeting and such decision should have been announced by the governor himself in his last Thursday update on covid-19.

"My brother, the governor is not happy about this development at all, most especially when he knew nothing about the said N25,000 charge on secondary school students.

"How can a reasonable government impose such amount as a levy on secondary school students in this current situation when all businesses have been affected due to covid-19. When people of the state can barely eat three square of a meal. It is uncalled for and so unfortunate we are having this kind of situation in the state.

"But this will be so because the majority of those appointed by the governor are not professionals and grassroots. Soyombo herself, where is she from? These people are just brought in from Lagos and abroad to come and rule without feeling the pains of the people. They believe all fingers are equal and everybody can live the kind of expensive lives they lived.

"But I can tell you that, something will be done soonest over the matter as the governor has summoned the Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education in the state, Ronke Soyombo and I learnt the Commissioner of Health has also be invited by the governor as well.

"Maybe after their meeting with the governor this morning, you press guys might be invited for a press conference by the governor himself or a press release will be issued by the CPS to the Governor. So, let's wait and see what happen next. Thank you".

It would be recalled that crisis brewed out in the state on Sunday following the instruction by the state ministry of education directing all secondary school students preparing for WAEC to undergone covid-19 test ahead of reopening of schools on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

The visibly angry parents in a viral video slammed the state governor and the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker for inflicting more hardship on them following economic downturn as a result of the global pandemic which has affected many businesses to crumble.

The parents who protested against the government's decision to charge the sum of N25,000 on each student before testing them for covid-19 queried why the government would impose levy on students of private schools while their counterparts in public schools were tested free.

ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE , HIS EXCELLENCY, PRINCE DAPO ABIODUN MFR UPDATE AND EFFORTS TO COMBAT COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE ,
 HIS EXCELLENCY, PRINCE DAPO ABIODUN MFR

 UPDATE AND EFFORTS TO COMBAT COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

My dear people of Ogun State,
 It is 26 days that I last addressed you on our continued efforts towards fighting COVID-19. The scourge has not only redefined human relationship, but has drastically changed the face of social interactions, and, indeed, life and living, generally. For now, we are all adapting to a new normal that nobody can say if we will ever return fully to our old ways. Nevertheless, we cannot fold our arms and sit on the fence for things to further degenerate. We will always be ready to deploy resources, insight and our capabilities to live with this new normal and hope that by providence, we will get away with the scourge as soon as possible.
2. However, as of now, the best of projections and prognoses show that we are yet to reach the peak of transmission.  The national figures are frightening. We have total confirmed cases of 41,804 as at Monday 28th July, 2020; 18,764 persons were treated and discharged. It is worrisome the number of fatalities continues to rise especially in the last 4 weeks. This has risen to 868. In our home State, it is also a fact that the number of cases of COVID-19 is on the upward swing, particularly in the last few weeks of the second phase of our ease of the restrictions and opening up of more sectors of our economy. As at the same 26th July, COVID-19 figures in Ogun State are: we have screened over 10,000; we have also tested 5,611 people; we have 1,318 confirmed cases; out of which 1, 054 have been successfully treated; but, I must also say that we have regrettable cases of 23 fatalities; while we still have 224 receiving medical attention. We will continue to intensify efforts and enlarge our screening capacity so that we can identify infected people for prompt treatment and resultantly flatten the curve.
3. We must admit that by available statistics, community transmission of the pandemic is increasing on daily basis. What makes it more worrisome is that many carriers are asymptomatic and this is putting our public health and safety at a higher risk, thus demanding that we must take personal responsibility. To this end, I urge our people to continue to take personal responsibility by adhering to the precautionary measures as enunciated by the World Health Organisation, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and the National Centre for Disease Control. We should ensure personal compliance and that of our loved ones.
4. You will recall that I mentioned in my last address that we were yet to commence full reopening of the economy. Our approach to full reopening is gradual. Our dear State’s economy cannot afford a reversal of the gains to stem the tide of community spread and we need to prepare more for the post-COVID-19 era. The fact is that while we continue to provide conducive environment for the individual prosperity of all our people, we will also continue to put measures in place to ensure and guarantee their wellbeing, welfare and wellness in this COVID-19 period and at all times. I must say that this is the kernel of the implementation of the “Building our Future Together” Agenda.
5. In the last few weeks, two important subjects have pervaded public discourse as it concerns Ogun State and COVID-19. They border on reopening of schools and the reopening of worship centres. These two subjects have peculiar importance to us as a Government. The education sector has not only been one of the biggest industries in our dear State, and there is no gainsaying that we are the education capital of Nigeria. We also are homes  to the biggest worship centres of the two major religions in Nigeria: Islam and Christianity. Here is where people come from different parts of the nation and even from all over the world to worship God in truth and in spirit.
6. On education, we appreciate the fact that only properly prepared and equipped youth of today will take the advantages and benefits of the future we are building. Education is a major pillar upon which we hope to build a better future for our children and grand children. We appreciate its importance so much that even in the heat of the COVID and its effects, we were the first to organise e-classes through the Ogun digiclass to keep our students safe whilst engaging in their studies and ensuring that learning continues.
7. However, we also appreciate the fact that we need to make these students physically available, especially to sit for external examinations which are not peculiar to our country alone. In this direction, we have put in place a multi-dimensional approach towards ensuring that our students resume learning in a safe and healthy environment. Our fear is that children are mostly asymptomatic even as carriers. These asymptomatic carriers might go back home after contracting the virus innocently and the transmission continues to their parents, or grand-parents, cousins, aunties and thus increase the spread of the virus.
8. I want to inform the people of Ogun State that, with or without COVID, the children of Ogun State and their education will remain our biggest priority. We have continued to engage different stakeholders in the educational sector and we have received far-reaching recommendations.
9. Towards this direction, we have made available to all public and private schools a Risk Assessment Form on www.ogmoest.org to assess their readiness and close identified gaps before resumption of academic activities. We are happy that the Federal Government and the external examination bodies, especially the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), have agreed on resumption dates and dates of examination especially for the exit classes. Therefore, in line with the Federal Government resolutions, exit classes, that is – strictly SS3 only (public or private schools) - will resume classes on Monday, 4th August, 2020. Then, there will be a 2-week revision classes to prepare the SS3 students for the commencement of the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) slated to start on Monday, 17th August, 2020. In readiness for this, we are putting in place facilities to meet COVID-19 preventive criteria. Amongst others:
* • A mandatory virtual training on prevention of Covid-19 for our school Administrative Heads and teachers;
* • Decontamination of the schools;
* • Teachers are being trained as first line responders
* • Establishment of sick bays / isolation rooms in each school
* • Provision of face masks
* • Provision of infrared thermometers
* • Provision of adequate supply of running water;
* • Provision of veronica buckets;
* • All School Administrators are to ensure that teachers are frequently trained on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for virtual engagement of students;
* • Principals and Vice-Principals are to ensure staggering of closing time for students;
* • There will not be general school assembly but schools will observe class assembly.
* • There are additional requirement for boarding schools, which the ministry of Education, Science and Technology will communicate to schools with boarding facilities before operating the facilities.
These measures are also applicable to all private schools operating in Ogun State. As a matter, it should be noted that any School, whether private or public, that fails to comply with these guidelines will not be allowed to reopen. Let me also state that, with the exception of students in the exit classes, all students in our schools would enjoy Automatic Promotion to the next class. The Basic Certificate Examination (BECE), National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB) and Common Entrance Examination into the 33 Model Schools with boarding facilities in our dear State will be announced on a later date.
10. Let me use this opportunity to implore all our parents, teachers and all other stakeholders in the Education sector of our dear State to continue to ensure the safety of our children. You all need to pay special attention to all these pupils and students and ensure that they take to all the precautionary advice and measures as soon as the schools are reopened. We cannot afford the spread of this pandemic in schools and our homes. By doing this, you will not only join in the fight against the Corona Virus, but also share in the Government efforts towards the successful implementation of our “Building our Future Together” Agenda.
11. I will now address the worship centres. The arguments have been diverse and opinions divided. But, as a government, we are not unmindful of the need to balance the spiritual fulfilment of citizens and their peaceful, secure and prosperous earthily imperatives. We, therefore, resolved to continue to strategise in line with the Presidential Task Force address of Monday, 29th June, 2020 which lifted the ban on worship centres, but allows each State of the Federation to manage its own peculiarity.
12. At this point, let me state very clearly that our Administration will remain resolute in its commitment and will not be distracted towards improving on the wellbeing, welfare and wellness of the people of Ogun State. Some have argued that we should have opened the worship centres immediately we opened markets. But, I have to state that there is a huge world of difference between our market places and our worship centres, especially in this part of the world. Markets, in Yoruba land, are usually open places with shops; people move around and will hardly be at a place for more than a few minutes at any time.
13. On the other hand, religious centres are enclosures; people are at a place for longer period of time; and, a lot of chanting and ecstatic expressions happen. In addition, a deep look into the population of our worship centres reveals that most of our worshippers are the elderly. They are medically and physically more vulnerable.  We will rather want our worship centres to be venues of solemnisation of matrimonies; christening of new-borns; venues of thanksgivings and praise-worship to the greatness of God rather than being centres that unwittingly promote community transmission of COVID-19 and or any other communicable diseases for that matter. This explains our cautious, consultative, inclusive, and collaborative approach to reopening of our worship centres. Be that as it may, we appreciate the fact that a wholesome development of a human being also entails a spiritual rejuvenation and a modicum of divinity.
14. We have continued to engage the leaderships of the two religious bodies, as represented by Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the League of Imams and Alfas on the modalities for the reopening of the religious houses. And, we thank them for their understanding, support and solidarity. In fact, the committee on the consideration of reopening of worship centres has been enlarged to include the Honourable Commissioners for Health; Environment; and, Physical Planning. This committee has continued to interface with the leadership of different religious centres at several times. I must say that this has yielded positive results.
15. We now have Guidelines for the reopening of our worship centres jointly developed and agreed with our religious leaders. This was finalised after collaborative and inclusive meeting with the religious institutional representatives and made available on Monday, 27th July, 2020. It is in our collective interest to fully comply with the Guidelines so that, together, we can further flatten the curve of this pandemic. For the avoidance of doubt, some of the elements of the guidelines are as follows:
* i. All congregants must wear their face masks appropriately (that is, No facemask, No entry);
* ii. Adequate provision of running water;
* iii. Worship centres should be adequately cleaned and disinfected before and after services;
* iv. Household bleach solution / equivalent should be adequately prepared for disinfectations;
* v. There should be adequate provision and supervision of multiple Veronica Buckets for handwashing (fully automated handwashing machines are preferable);
* vi. There should be provision of alcohol-based sanitiser which must be used before and after service;
* vii. Worship centres should provide adequate toilet facilities with water;
* viii.  Muslims are advised to perform ablution at home and go to Mosque with their personal praying mats;
* ix. Qualified Medical Practitioners or trained personnels should check the temperature of worshippers with infrared thermometer before allowing them to enter worship centres;
* x. There should be adequate medical support for sick persons;
* xi. All services on Friday/Sunday and other week days must adhere strictly to COVID-19 Guidelines;
* xii. There should be pre-designated standing position/sitting points to ensure not less than 2 meter distancing;
* xiii. The duration of religious services should not be more than one and a half hours. In addition, same duration of one and a half hours must be observed as intervals, where there are multiple services;
* xiv. The use of Air-conditioners should be discouraged while worship centres should be well ventilated with the use of fans;
* xv. There should not be any handshake/hugs by worshippers;
* xvi. Proper awareness of the susceptibility of the aged and people with signs of ill-health should be adequately created among worshippers at all times;
* xvii. Constant sensitisation of COVID-19 and its dangers should be included in sermon and goodwill messages;
* xviii. Provision of isolation rooms is mandatory in all worship centres or facilities;
* xix. Religious services and events should be recorded with digital camera for record purposes;
* xx. Worship Centres and facilities with more than 200 worshippers in a given service must further seek concurrence with the State Government committee;
* xxi. At all times, there should be adequate ventilation and effective Entry & Exit Management Procedure in each of the Worship Centres;
* xxii. Administration of holy communion should be devoid of sharing of any item and must follow COVID-19 protocols.
 *16. In view of the above, Friday, 14th August, 2020, has been tentatively fixed for the reopening of worship centres.  We urge our religious leaders to ensure that they abide by the measures mutually agreed upon and rolled out.* As Government, we will not hesitate to impose severe sanctions, including, but not limited to lockdown, on any Worship Centre that fails to comply with the laid down guidelines. It is important to note that all religions make provision for obedience to God and the authorities of the land. The Holy Qur’an stipulates in chapter 4, verse 59 that “O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the messenger and those in authority among you...” The same message is also preached in the Holy Bible. According to the English Standard Version (ESV), Roman 13, verses 1-7, “let everybody be subject to the governing authorities... Those that exist have been instituted by God... those who resist will incur judgement”.  We pray that God in His infinite mercies will continue to answer our prayers and help us with a cure to this pandemic. Amin!
17. At this point, let me congratulate the entire Muslim Ummah on the sighting of the moon of the 12th month of the Islamic calendar which also heralds the celebration of Eid-il-Kabir, popularly called “Ileya”, which is the 10th day of the last month of Islam. I understand that “Ileya” celebration will be on Friday, 31st July, 2020. However, having considered the prevalent circumstances as dictated by COVID-19, this Eid-il-Kabir celebration in Ogun State will follow the same pattern as we had in Eid-il-Fitri at the conclusion of Ramadan Fast, two months ago. We are guided by the counsel of the Ulammah, and especially, in line with the resolution of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Let me state, therefore, that there will not be any form of “Eid” prayer or any form of gathering in Ogun State.
18. Therefore, each family will have to observe the “Eid” prayer at home. We beseech our citizens to stay safe by staying at home. And, there will not be any festivities or any gathering that violate the COVID-19 protocols of not more than 20 people at a time. We want to thank the entire Muslim Ummah for their thoughtfulness and consent that this year’s prayers will be observed privately and solemnly. I pray that we will all celebrate many more Eid-il-Kabir in the land of the living and in good health. Amin!
19. Let me also remind all of us that the initial precautionary measures are still in place. For clarity, the existing guidelines to combat COVID-19 in the State still subsist. These include:
i. All 5 working days in the week (Monday to Friday) are still opened for businesses and other economic transactions with only Saturday and Sunday as lockdown days until 14th August, 2020;
ii. Observation of dusk-to-dawn curfew as directed by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) i.e. between 10.00pm and 4.00am daily;
iii. Wearing of face masks in the public is now compulsory. Therefore, I hereby invoke powers conferred on me by Regulation 7 of the Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations No. 2 of 2020 (the Regulations), made pursuant to section 33 of the Public Health Law of Ogun State (the Law), to mandate the compulsory wearing of face masks by all persons in public as part of measures to prevent the rapid spread of the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Failure to do so is punishable by up to six months' imprisonment under Regulation 8 of the Regulations and section 68 of the Law;
iv. Only one passenger is still allowed for motorcycles and two passengers only for tricycles;
v. Taxi cabs and buses still have 60% limitation on their carrying capacity and the measure to arrest and impound any driver that contravenes this in our State is still in force;
vi. The COVID-19 Task Force in markets must continue to ensure physical distancing, availability of hand washing facilities, and use of gloves and facemasks for traders;
vii. Decontamination will continue in our markets and other public places;
viii. Limitation of all gatherings to a maximum number of 20, is still in effect till 14th August, 2020;
ix. We have commenced the process of certifying Gyms, arcades, swimming pools, barber-shops, spas, beauty Salons, and all public parks, and golf courses including those in private residential estates with a view to reopening them in the foreseeable future;
x. Event centres, bars, casinos, cinemas, and night clubs are still under lockdown;
xi. Restaurants are permitted to provide only take-away services and should also ensure that there are no more than 10-15 customers at a time with physical distancing measures in place. Guidelines for eat-in services are still being fine-tuned;
xii. All industries in Ogun State must continue to comply with the “Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines for Workplaces in Ogun State to Combat COVID-19” as issued by the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments. Therefore, testing of staff for COVID-19 in all industries in the State must be sustained;
xiii. The Task Force set up to conduct random spot checks on the premises of the industries, restaurants and other business enterprises to   compliance is still in operation.
20. As I end this address, I thank all our frontline workers – doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical lab scientists and indeed all health workers for their dedication towards this fight. I will continue to commend the team spirit and doggedness of our security personnel, journalists and other essential workers for their efforts to flatten the curve of COVID-19. Similarly, I appreciate all individuals and corporate organizations that have partnered with us by way of donation and other means. We are indeed grateful. However, our doors are still open for more collaboration with interested individual or organizations on the fight against this COVID-19.
21. I thank you all for listening and God bless.

Ogun set to reopen churches, mosques

Church and Mosque

Ogun State Government on Wednesday set machinery in motion towards reopening of worship centres, barely four months after they were closed as part of moves to flatten the curve of COVID-19 infections.

In March, following its ban on high density gathering, the state government banned congregational service at the worship centres, in furtherance to its effort at curtailing the spread of COVID-19.

Daily Trust reports that early last month, the government met with religious leaders and tentatively fixed reopening of worship centres for June 19, but the planned was later suspended by Governor Dapo Abiodun, who cited rising number of cases for the decision.

However, a government delegation on Wednesday visited churches and mosques in Ijebu, Remo and Egba axis of the state, to ascertain the level of preparedness of worship centers towards reopening of congregational services.

The team comprising three Commissioners, Dr. Tomi Coker (Health); TPL Tunji Odunlami (Physical Planning and Urban Development) and Hon Abiodun Abudu-Balogun (Environment) met with religious leaders and inspected preventive measures put in place by the faith-based organizations.

Speaking on the inspection, the Commissioner for Health, noted that there was mixed reactions among the religious bodies on their level of preparedness.

Coker said:  “We observed mixed reaction from the religious leaders on their level of preparedness because some have shown that they cannot actually guarantee the safety of their congregants from the COVID-19 pandemic and there are some that have complied with the laid down protocols.”

On his part, Abudu-Balogun, commended some of the worship centres on their level of preparedness towards reopening, while expressing satisfaction on decontamination of the centres.

“We are here on the directive of Governor Dapo Abiodun to ascertain the level of compliance, as well as the preparedness of worship centre towards reopening. From the environmental point of view, we can see a high level of preparedness regarding decontamination of worship centres. What we noticed and needs to be addressed urgently is the ratio of chemical required to decontaminate the premises,” he said.

Responding, the Cathedral Administrator, St. Sebastian’s Cathedral, Odo-Egbo in Ijebu -Ode, Rev. Father Vincent Ajayi, said the visit by the government officials showed the commitment of Prince Dapo Abiodun’s administration towards ensuring the safety of lives of the people.

On his part, Wakilu Musulumi of Yoruba land, Edo and Delta States, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal, said the leadership of the Central Mosque, had regularly engaged the Muslim Faithful on COVID-19 safety guidelines, adding that the mosque has procured the needed safety kits, such as thermometers and hand washing materials, to contain the spread among the congregation.

Three Fulani teenagers arrested for Ogun highway robbery

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three Fulani teenagers for highway robbery in the Alapako area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The suspects, Uzefa Idris, 19; Adamu Yakubu, 18; and Ayuba Buhari, 17, were arrested following a distress call received by the Divisional Police Officer, Owode Egba Division, SP Matthew Ediae.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said the DPO was informed that a Mazda bus was forcefully stopped on the highway by a gang of armed robbers and the occupants were being dispossessed of their belongings.

The PPRO stated, “Upon the receipt of the distress call, the DPO, Owode Egba, SP Matthew Ediae, quickly led his anti-robbery team to the scene.

“On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums took to their heels but were chased into the bush, where three of them were apprehended.”

Oyeyemi explained that the driver of the bus, Zacheaus Olaniyi, and a passenger was rescued from the robbers.

He said the police were able to recover N545,000 and one itel phone belonging to a passenger, Oluwakemi Oyegade, from the hoodlums.

Oyeyemi stated, “The two victims narrated that the hoodlums jumped on the road from the bush and forcefully stopped the vehicle, consequent upon which they started beating them with machetes before dispossessing them of their valuables.

“Recovered from the arrested ones are the sum of N99,700  and one itel phone.”

Oyeyemi said the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to Special Anti-Robbery Squad for discreet investigation and prosecution
