Family Sacks Mother Of Eight-year-old Rape Victim For Seeking Justice

Ifeyinwa Ezukamma, a 40-year-old mother of five, was chased out of her matrimonial home by her husband’s family for insisting on justice for her eight-year-old daughter, raped by her tenant.

Ezukamma told newsmen that the incident took place in their country home, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. She said though she caught the suspect, aged 57, in the act on July 23, she claimed the man had been violating her daughter since March.

The woman, who had since packed to her relatives’ home, alleged that her husband had been compromised, and therefore, warned her not to pursue the matter because it would bring disgrace to their family.

“I noticed an unusual noise and movement in the bathroom. So out of curiosity, I went to check if everything was normal. To my amazement, it was a tenant in our house, an old man, having sex with my daughter. I asked my daughter what happened, she said the old man had been raping her for some months and had threatened to kill her if she told anybody about it, that was why she did not tell me,” she said.

Ezukamma alleged that her husband collected money and asked her to do the same, and her travail started when she refused, insisting that she would get justice for her daughter. She said the family chased her and took away her teenage daughters from her for insisting on bringing disgrace to the family and reporting the matter to a child rights organisation, after the matter was reported at a police station.

Preliminary reports from Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, where the child was taken to on August 4 and examined, showed that there was penetration. The document signed by Dr Madubuike Chinelo said the history was sturdily suggestive of sexual abuse.

“The episode had happened up to five times prior to the most recent encounter. The examination done in the presence of a chaperon showed there was hyperemia of the vaginal mucosa, no obvious vaginal discharge, and a hymen that had already been tampered with, the client was placed on some drugs for the vaginitis,” it stated.

Child Right Brigade International (CRIB), an NGO, said the matter was reported to its office on August 12. CRIB vowed to resist any cover-up and would ensure that the suspect was charged to court and prosecuted.

Obiora Nnaemeka, coordinator of CRIB in Anambra, said the information the organisation gathered was that the father of the victim, Mr Alex Ezukamma, collected some money to strike out the case from the police.

Nnaemeka said CRIB had written the Divisional Police Officer at Ogidi station to effect the arrest of the suspect and the father of the child, and bring up the matter for investigation and prosecution. He said this would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders and stem the tide of rising rape and pedophilia in society.

On his part, the father of the victim confirmed to newsmen that his daughter was raped and that the man had been arrested, detained, and granted bail. He added that the suspect had also been warned not to return to the house.

Ezukamma denied collecting any form of gratification for his raped daughter, saying though he was a pagan, he would never touch such money but would prefer to do some cleansing.

He said his family was not in support of the wife’s push for prosecution because of the shame it would bring to the family and the stigma it would leave on his daughter.

“She disobeyed me, and my elders and junior ones’ order not to drag our family name into the mud, and the shame it will bring to us and our daughter. That is why I asked her to leave my house. My wife can go to any length she wishes, but our name must not be involved,” he said.

When contacted, CSP Remigus Ekuri, DPO, Ogidi, confirmed the incident and said the matter would be charged to court as soon as the medical report was available.

TUC begs police IG to release the report of a rape allegation against Kogi commissioner

Police to Charge Suspected Killer of Arotile for Culpable Homicide ...

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, not to sweep under the carpet the rape case allegedly levelled against the Kogi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Abdumumini Danga.

The Kogi State Chairman of the TUC, Comrade Ranti Ojo, made the call yesterday during a peaceful protest in Lokoja that was tagged “Say no to Rape and all forms of Gender-Based Violence.”

Ojo lamented that the Nigerian Police under the leadership of Adamu has failed to tell the country the outcome of their investigation five months after the former Miss Kogi made the allegation, which drew public condemnation from far and near.

He described rape as a grievous offence, which should be condemned in its entirety no matter how highly placed the culprit might be in the society and noted that the commissioner must be punished in accordance with the law if found guilty of the alleged offence.

“We are here to lend our voices against rape in Kogi State and Nigeria in general. Collectively, we must stop rape because it is a sin against God and does not speak well of humanity.

“I’m calling on the government and institutions that are saddled with the responsibility, to implement stiffer punishment against every culprit that is involved in rape no matter how highly placed he may be.

Ojo said: “In Kogi State, it was alleged that the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Abdumumini Danga raped a lady. Up till this moment, the public has been kept in the dark. Let me make this passionate appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Muhammed Adamu that this case must not be swept under the carpet.

“The IG must investigate this case and tell Nigerians what the outcome is. If the commissioner is found wanting, he must face the full wrath of the law.”

Similarly, the Executive Director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, Mr Idris Miliki, said: “Rape and assault perpetrated by anybody is a criminal offence under the Nigeria Law and should not be accepted.

“It is condemnable irrespective of whoever is involved and wherever it takes place or is carried out under any circumstance. Research has shown clearly that women are the victims of rape while men are the perpetrators. We need to have a collaborative agenda against rape.

“There is one fundamental issue I want the TUC, the NAWOJ and the FIDA to look into. What happened to the case of alleged rape by a government official in Kogi State? Where are we now on the matter? Are we going to allow the matter to die a natural death like many others? We won’t allow this.

“It is more worrisome when a government official, in the calibre of a serving commissioner, could be alleged to have been involved in such criminal activities.”

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Women Commission of the TUC, Kogi State Chapter, Mrs Margaret Bose Adeika, appealed to the federal government to enact a law that would put rapists in jail for thirty years.

Adeika observed that underage girls and ladies are no longer safe due to the high rate of rape cases in the country today.

Brothers jailed 22 years for raping four minors

Two siblings have been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for raping four minors in Minna, the Niger State capital.

In sentencing Hassan Bilyaminu and Abdullahi Biliyaminu, who are also clerics at an Islamic school, Chief Magistrate Hauwa Baba Yusuf wondered “what people like the convicts derived from assaulting and defiling little girls”.

The four victims were pupils of the convicts at an Islamic school.

The oldest of the victims is 11, while the youngest is six, the court was told.

The suspect pleaded guilty, asking the Magistrate to tamper justice with mercy.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an  Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court yesterday sentenced a surveyor, John Otema, to 53-years imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old student of University of Lagos.

Justice  Soladoye found the convict guilty of a two-count charge of rape and assault, but absolved him of guilt in the rape charge of another student.

The charges were brought against the convict by the Lagos State government.

The court sentenced Otema to 50 years in prison for rape and three years for assault on one of his victims. Both sentence run concurrently.

Otema was said to have physically assaulted one of the victims by hitting her several times on the face as well as choking and biting her back.

“Women and girls like every other member of the society should be respected and not be turned into prey by sex maniacs,” Justice  Soladoye said.

Female soldier raped by bandits appeals dismissal

The Nigerian Army has dismissed a soldier for getting pregnant after she was raped by suspected bandits while travelling to Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The rape victim was charged with one count of ‘conduct prejudicial to service discipline,’ found guilty and dismissed from the regiment.

She, however, declined to speak on her ordeal when contacted on the phone on Wednesday, saying, “I have not asked you to publish anything, but we are working on the appeal.”

Her lawyer, Johnson Oyewole, expressed the conviction that his client’s unlawful dismissal would be overturned and she would be recalled to continue serving her fatherland.

According to an appeal to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, filed by her lawyer, the victim enlisted in the Army in March 2012 as a member of 67 Regular Recruits intake, and was serving with 56 Signal Command, Mile 2, Lagos, before the incident.

The letter, which challenged the soldier’s dismissal, read, ”It is manifest that the purported trial of our client was tainted with substantial irregularities; there is no offence under the law and no element of the offence of misconduct prejudicial to service discipline that talks of pregnancy while in service and warranted dismissal under section 103(1).”

It explained that the soldier obtained a pass to travel to Oyo State, sometime in October 2014 when the vehicle she boarded ran into bandits along Odo-Oba road and she was allegedly raped by five men.

She was taken to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, where she was treated for six days.

Following the sexual assault, she obtained an extract from the police crime diary, a sworn affidavit, as well as a medical report, which indicated that she sustained “injury of right ankle joint with laceration and bruises around the thigh region.”

In December, she reported sick at the Military hospital and the matron confirmed that she was 12 weeks pregnant.
