President Buhari, Family Under Fire For Breaching CBN Act, NCDC Guideline At Hanan Wedding

Many Nigerians have called out the first family for violating part of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act at the wedding ceremony of Hanan Buhari, one of the daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Many also condemned the safety guidelines issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with regards to overcrowding and social distancing to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hanan and Turad, son of a former lawmaker, Mahmud Sani Sha’aban, got married at the Aso Rock villa on Friday – a ceremony which was graced by top government officials, members of the diplomatic community and politicians.

Pictures and videos from the wedding, including those shared on Instagram by the first lady, Aisha Buhari, went viral and trended throughout the weekend.

One video circulated by Sahara Reporters showed the couple dancing and other attendees dancing while some dancers sprayed money on the couple. No social distancing was observed in the video and many attendees were seen without face masks.

This generated outrage as many expressed disappointments at the public figures and other attendees for breaching the CBN Act as well as the NCDC safety guidelines.

Many called for sanctions for offenders while a few others believed the wedding should have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic situation in the country which has caused hardship in the lives of citizens.

What the law says

Section 21 of the CBN Act warns against defacing the Naira. It prescribes a fine of N50,000 or six months imprisonment or both for offenders.

“21. (1) A person who tampers with a coin or note with or trading in issued by the Bank is guilty of an offence and shall on notes and coins imprisonment for a term not less than six months or to a fine not less than N50,000 or to both such fine and imprisonment.

(2) A coin or note shall be deemed to have been tampered with if the coin or note has been impaired, diminished or lightened otherwise than by fair wear and tear or has been defaced by stumping, engraving, mutilating, piercing, stapling, writing, tearing, soiling, squeezing or any other form of deliberate and willful abuse whether the coin or note has or has not been thereby diminished or lightened.

(3) For the avoidance of doubt, spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under Sub-section (1) of this section,” part of the Act states.

The law further clarifies the term “spraying in Section 21(5):

“(i) “Matching” includes spreading scattering or littering of any surface with any Naira notes or coins and stepping thereon, regardless of the value, volume, occasion or intent.

“(ii) “Spraying” includes adorning, decorating or spraying anything or any person or any part of any person or the person of another with Naira notes or coins or sprinkling or sticking of the Naira notes or coins in a similar manner regardless of the amount, occasion or the intent.”

The CBN has often re-echoed its fight against the abuse of Naira notes either by spraying at events, trampling on or squeezing it.

The bank has repeatedly vowed that it would clamp down on any person or group culpable of such acts.

With regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials of the NCDC, other public officers including the president, have on several occasions warned against breaching the safety guidelines issued by the agency.

Offenders, including celebrities, have been made to face sanctions ranging from community service to payment of fines.

Although the number of new cases has declined in recent times, the country is still battling with the pandemic as well as the impact on citizens and the country.

As at Monday, the number of confirmed cases stood at 55,160 with 1061 deaths.

Mum is the word

As it stands, only social critics have condemned the act publicly.

Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, did not respond to telephone calls put across to him. The CBN’s spokesperson, Isaac Okoroafor, could not be reached via telephone as well.

Although Hanan’s wedding is one of many ceremonies across Nigeria where the Naira has been defaced and the CBN Act violated, there have been few reports of prosecution of offenders by the authorities.

Open Letter To Chief Of Staff To The President

Open letter to Chief of Staff to the President

Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, President Buhari’s Chief of Staff

Dear Professor Ibrahim Gambari CFR,

I write this piece with a heavy heart; my mind is troubled with the current happenings in our dear country. Prof Sir, I specifically write to you because of the high respect I have for you, and indeed with the hope that our dear president would listen to you as his close and trusted friend.

No doubt, the current administration has tried on infrastructural developments most especially in the transportation and aviation sectors, despite the downturns in the oil industry globally.

However, there are many issues people are grumbling about in the effort to ensure the socioeconomic stability of the country. Let me start by the most recent government decisions that are directly going to affect the ordinary Nigerians drastically:

1.      The increase in the fuel pump price to N151.56 per litre.

2.      Increase in electricity tariff

Sir, the president needs to be informed that these decisions shouldn’t have been his priority for now; or at least that the timing is absolutely wrong considering the economic hardship that many Nigerians are currently subjected to.

Sir, in case the president is away from the Nigerian reality, kindly remind him that the current price of local rice is over N23,000 and that of foreign rice about N27,000. To talk less of other cereals; apparently the price of everything is skyrocketing at the speed of light.

Perhaps, the 30,000 tons of maize the president ordered for release from the federal reserved to feed poultry should have been distributed to the Nigerian masses, because there is so much hunger in the land.

In addition to all these, Sir, as an experienced academician, and I am glad to call you Professor, perhaps, the first professor to hold this subtle position if my memory of Nigeria’s history post republic serves me well, the current situation between the federal government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) should not be happening under your watch. After their salary was withheld for several months, followed by their forceful enrolment into the controversial IPPIS, again the same salary is withheld currently indefinitely.

Buhari's Daughters' Wedding Has Been Fixed, See The Lucky Man and Date

The wedding of President Buhari's youngest daughter, Hanna age 22, has finally been fixed after her return from Dubai with her mother and following reports that made rounds weeks ago.

Below is her wedding invitation card and the wedding Fatiha will be held inside the Aso Rock Villa on the 4th of September 2020.

She is set to tie the knot with Mohammed Turad, a special adviser to Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing.

Pictures of her husband to be;

As custom demands, the latest couple will receive blessings from their families in a practice that will involve the reading of the first verse of the Holy Quran in the presence of their immediate families/relatives.

In the invitation, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji (Dr) Sheju Idris wishes to inform the general public of the wedding Fatiha.

"In the view of the current corona virus pandemic and in compliance with directives of health authorities in Nigeria, usual gathering in such events will not be possible. He used the medium to solicit for prayers for the success of the occasion.

Hanan's husband-to-be, Mohammed Turad, is a son to Mahmud Sani Sha'aban, an ex-lawmaker who represented Zaria at the Federal House of Representatives from May 2003 to May 2007.

Hanan who is the daughter of the President of Nigeria, is a first class graduate of Photography from Ravensbourne University in England.

She is a young fine art photographer from Katsina state northern Nigeria.

As the daughter of Buhari, she has lived a live dictated by the expectations and responsibilities unique to her family's position.

After her graduation in 2019 and return to Nigeria, she began to practice her profession.

But something happened in early January this year, when she took Nigeria's presidential jet for a photoshoot in Bauchi state.

That singular act sparked a lot of controversy on various social media platforms with many asking if the country's presidency is now family business.

When a lot of people lashed out on her, the Senior Special Assistant to the president, Garba Shehu, insisted that she was granted permission by the president and also a clearance from the National Security Advisor to use the presidential jet.

Just a few days ago, Aisha Buhari and this her daughter returned from a "medical" trip to Dubai but Nigerians are saying that she went there to buy wedding things for her daughter.
