40 Herbal Medicines Undergoing Review As Possible Coronavirus Cure – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has disclosed that 40 herbal drugs are currently undergoing a review as possible Coronavirus cure.

Adeyeye who disclosed that the herbal drugs are undergoing review to ensure their safety for use averred that if the herbal drugs are not properly reviewed it could kill fast.

She noted that there is still no cure for Coronavirus and also warned against claims affirming such.

The NAFDAC DG said;

“In March 2019, we inaugurated the Nigerian Herbal Medicine Product Committee (HMPC) to bridge the gap often created between traditional medicine practitioners and researchers.
“COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity and we have been encouraging traditional medicine practitioners to submit their herbal formulations for evaluation.

“We also developed guidelines on how to register herbal medicine online and the labelling of the product.
“Prof. Maurice Iwu’s application for approval of herbal medicine for the management of COVID-19 is also part of the 40 applications we are reviewing for safety.
“We use an animal for safety test to ensure the formulation will not kill anybody.
“Until a clinical trial is done in a scientific manner, no herbal medicine manufacturer can claim cure or effectiveness to treat COVID-19 associated symptoms.
“I believe that Nigeria’s herbal medicines may be able to cure COVID-19.
“They have a lot of potentials and it is time to translate the research of herbs into products of proven safety and efficacy, for the benefit of our people.”

Coronavirus! Russia Delivers Another Good News to the Whole World Concerning First Vaccine

According to a publication by Aljazeera and Anadolu website, the Government of Russia through the Health Ministry has now announced that it will begin mass COVID-19 vaccine production within two weeks time period.

This is another good news to the whole world from Russia proving that the world might be free from the COVID-19 pandemic much sooner than it had been

registered is however said to be going to be administered to more vulnerable people to COVID-19 mostly elders, children and Medical health workers who are exposed to the virus on a daily basis.

The vaccine is also said to be going to be administered through two infections.

This comes after works Health Organization had yesterday thrown cold water on the vaccine after it revealed that it had not received enough information from Russia concerning their first COVID-19 vaccine that has been registered.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday asked that Nigeria, being the biggest country in Africa, be given priority in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccine once it is ready.

His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, in a statement made available to journalists, quoted the Vice President as making the call during a virtual meeting which Federal Government officials had with representatives of Pfizer and Biotech, the international pharmaceutical firms promoting the BNT162 vaccine.

The statement was titled “COVID-19 vaccine: Health and safety of Nigerians is Buhari administration’s priority -VP Osinbajo.”

Akande quoted Osinbajo as saying, “It is important for us that we are prioritised –as the largest country in Africa – in the distribution of the best COVID-19 vaccine when it is eventually ready.”

NCDC Explain Why COVID-19 Patients Are Treated With Anti-Malaria Drugs.

Chikwe Iheakweazu, the director-general of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday spoke on the differences between COVID-19 and malaria.

But speaking at the daily briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, the NCDC boss said: ”I think we all know COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a virus. Malaria is caused by a parasite. They are completely different diseases.

This revelations by some high-profile survivors, who spoke about the drugs administered on them during their treatment. One of the survivors, Raymond Dokpesi who is the founder of DAAR communications Plc, had said that all the drugs administered on him were anti-malaria medication.

“However, many diseases present exactly the same way in the beginning. Yellow fever presents the same way with fever at the beginning, Lassa fever the same way with malaria.

“So, the initial presentation of a febrile illness is similar across diseases. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19. What clinicians do is to manage your symptoms so that your body recovers as quickly as possible.

“You can have Malaria and COVID-19. That you have COVID-19 doesn’t prevent you from having Malaria and if you are in a hospital for one month, you could definitely be co-infected by both of them.

“So there are many reasons why people receive similar treatments but they are two completely different diseases with different parthenogenesis.” he said
